Change My Password

CSUN requires users to update their password periodically to help protect user accounts and personal information. When your password is due to expire, you will see a “Change My Password” prompt before logging into the CSUN portal. Follow the steps below to update your password. The process uses Duo MFA to verify it's really you.

Security First

  • Only change your password from a trusted device on a trusted network. Never change your password on a shared device or a public wireless network.
  • Verify that the page is a real CSUN login page, the first part of the URL (the domain) must end in csun.edu such as lad.csun.edu or shibboleth.csun.edu.
  • Never approve an unexpected DUO prompt. Unexpected prompts are a sign of password theft. If you receive an unexpected DUO prompt, change your password and contact the IT Help Center

Before you begin

  • Know your current password, otherwise use "Forgot My Password"
  • Have your DUO device available

Password Guidelines

  • Use a long passphrase. The minimum is 12 characters. Longer is better
  • Do not reuse passwords from other sites
  • Don't include personal details such as name, CSUN userID, birthdays... These can make your password easy to guess.

After you change your password

  • Lock and unlock your computer, typing in your new password
  • Change your password for CSUN wireless (eduroam)
  • If you synch email on your mobile device, change your password for the CSUN email account on your device
