HyFlex for Students

What is HyFlex?

If you are enrolled in a HyFlex course in Fall 2021, as a student, you can attend scheduled class meetings in-person (face-to-face) or engage in real-time with the instructor and students via Zoom while attending online (synchronously online). Some instructors may allow students to engage with the class online on their own time (asynchronous online).

How do I know if I’m taking a HyFlex course in Fall 2021?

Your department or instructor will reach out and confirm that you are enrolled in a HyFlex course before the beginning of classes.

Do I need any additional equipment if I’m taking a HyFlex course?

No. HyFlex courses do not require students to purchase any additional equipment or devices beyond what they already have. If you do not have access to a computer or internet connection and would like to join synchronously or asynchronously online, please visit our Device Loaner Program page where we have laptops and internet hotspots available to students at no charge.

If you are a first-time freshman or a first-time transfer student, CSUN is part of the CSUCCESS initiative through the CSU Chancellor's Office which guarantees you a 64GB iPad Air, Apple Smart Keyboard Folio, and Apple Pencil at no charge for the duration of your time at CSUN. For more information and instructions on registering, please visit the CSUN CSUCCESS page.

HyFlex on Campus

At CSUN we will be exploring the best implementation model for HyFlex courses. Using the HyFlex modality, faculty teach from a traditional classroom equipped with the technology needed to engage with students who are present in the room, synchronously online, or accessing the session asynchronously online. As we gradually repopulate campus, IT is upgrading 18 rooms to pilot HyFlex classroom design. As CSUN pilots HyFlex, a small number of HyFlex courses will be taught beginning in Fall 2021.

Where can I find examples of HyFlex at other CSU campuses?

To see some examples of a HyFlex classroom at other CSU campuses, visit the Fresno State University HyFlex teaching page or the Cal State Long Beach HyFlex Classrooms page.

How is HyFlex different from Lecture Capture?

Lecture capture is available in several classrooms and large lecture halls on campus. However, Lecture Capture does not have a synchronous online component. HyFlex is a specific course designation in SOLAR and HyFlex classrooms require a higher degree of technology to incorporate the synchronous online elements.
