Fernando VaughnHello everybody! Most of you already know me, and for those of you who don't, my name is Fernando Cole Vaughn. I'm a student at PCC currently studying linguistics endeavoring to become an English teacher abroad and ultimately a translator. I participated in the SLI program cohort 3, 2010-2011. I'll do my best to make this message short, but I just wanted to take the time to describe the type of experience I had with SLI and express my deepest appreciation to those involved.

Before we joined the program, we were told that it was going to be exceptionally intense, and that the sights we would see abroad in Russia were going to change our lives. They were absolutely right. In the first summer the high quality training we received in grammar and conversational speech was truly invaluable and the perfect foundation for our experience in Russia. Many say that in order to learn a language, you have to truly want it, and this program is the epitome of that saying, because the augmentation of our language skills in regards to the short amount of time we completed everything, is something that can't be acquired by classes or even real life practice alone.

In Moscow and St. Petersburg, I was left in such awe by the craftsmanship of man and elegancy of the Russian culture. The most memorable sights that I'll hold close to my heart were the White Nights in St. Petersburg and the Petergrov palace. However, aside from the tourism, the language training and diploma we received in the Russian university РГГУ are invaluable assets that I can apply to my future career, in which I currently already am today. After the program in Moscow, I decided to take the opportunity to travel to Ukraine and apply the knowledge I just required and use it in real life practice, because Ukraine is a Russian speaking country as well.  In short, with the connections and friends I've made here, I've already been invited as a guest speaker in several language schools and offers for potential job prospects. This is all a direct result, as I consider, from the SLI program. Now I'd like to express my thanks and regards to everyone who was involved in this incredible journey.

I'd like to start by thanking Oleg Nikolaivich - the work load of grammar was heavy, tests were intense, but it all paid off in the end, and I'll always appreciate the support and confidence you instilled in all of us. Thank you!

Tatiana Ivanovna - Your lessons demanded the best from us but were always mind compelling in understanding the differences between Russian and American culture and how to better understand the Russian mentality so that our stay there would go smoothly. Your bright personality, emotional support and belief in me really helped me get past the doubts I had about myself and I'll always appreciate that. Thank you.

Last, but of course not least, Dina Alexandravno Mokhnatkin - Our teacher, our protector, our supporter, our provider, our Russian mother, there are not enough words in the English or Russian language combined that can express the gratitude and respect I have for you and what you did for me and us all personally. You truly played and fulfilled all those roles for us both in America and in Russia, and then some. You opened our eyes to a whole new and beautiful society and culture and enriched our lives forever.  The type of character it takes to manage the responsibility that is required of your position as director of the Russian department is remarkably admirable and not one that just anybody can handle, and you did it all for us. Through this journey, our whole group became closer with everyday and in the end truly became a family! You were the one who believed in me and encouraged me to join the program and without you, I would not be where I am today. My deepest feelings of gratitude go to you and I hope to make you proud as one of your personal students! Thank you very much!
