Shawntel Barreiro Named NSF Fellow

All CSUN Fellows Accepted to PhD Programs for the Third Year

For the third year in a row, all HSI Pathways/Mellon Student Fellows who applied to PhD programs were admitted to a program with full funding. Between them, the nine applicants received 34 offers to PhD programs. Next year, they will head to Binghampton University; Indiana University Bloomington; New York University; The Ohio State University; Rutgers University; The University of Arizona; The University of Massachusetts, Amherst; and The University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill (2). Read more about their success here.

Student Fellows Visit Five Graduate Campuses

The HSI Pathways/Mellon Student Fellows in Cohort Three were hosted by five graduate institutions this fall. Students traveled to Northwestern University, New York University, the University of Pennsylvania, UC Berkeley, and UC Davis. They toured the campuses, met with faculty and graduate students, and explored Chicago, New York, Philadelphia, Berkeley, and Davis. We are grateful to these campuses for hosting our students, and to the faculty and graduate students for spending time with our cohort.

HSI Pathways Enjoys National Success

Twenty-six HSI Pathways Student Fellows from three HSI campuses applied to graduate programs this year and will be matriculating into graduate programs during the 2019-2020 academic year.  Sixteen of those students will be entering doctoral programs, with nine of them from CSUN. Read more from the Rutgers Center for Minority Serving Institutions.

Cohort Three Completes Summer Seminar 

HSI Pathways/Mellon Student Fellows have completed their summer seminar.  After a  three-day  retreat, the students lived on campus for six weeks and completed more than 170 hours of training in theory, methods, and skills needed for graduate school success.  Student Fellows will spend the rest of summer working on their research projects and are deeply grateful for the many faculty and administrators who led workshops.

Virginia Gomez named Sally Casanova Scholar

Virginia Gomez (Gender & Women’s Studies) has been named a Sally Casanova Pre-Doctoral Scholar for the 2019-2020 academic year. Professor Breny Mendoza, who also teaches in the HSI Pathways Summer Seminar, will be serving as Virginia’s advisor on her research project.  Congratulations to Virginia!

CSUN Celebrates Graduating HSI Pathways/Mellon Student Fellows

Students, faculty, and administrators gathered in the Ferman Presentation Room at Oviatt Library to celebrate HSI Pathways/Mellon Student Fellows who are graduating in the CSUN Class of 2019.  Chief Diversity Officer Natalie Mason-Kinsey, Interim Provost Stella Theodoulou, and Vice President and Dean of Students William Watkins congratulated the students on their accomplishments.  Students talked about their experience in the program and were sashed for graduation by PI Jackie Stallcup.  We wish all graduates the best as they continue on their pathway to the professoriate!

All CSUN Fellows Accepted to PhD Programs for the Second Year

For the second year in a row, all HSI Pathways/Mellon Student Fellows who applied to PhD programs were admitted to a program.  Between them, the nine applicants received 44 offers to PhD programs.  Next year, they will head to Cornell University, New York University, Northwestern University, University of California, Davis, University of California, Irvine, University of California, Riverside, University of California, San Diego, University of Connecticut, and University of Texas, Austin.

Student Fellows Present their Research at the University of Pennsylvania

HSI Pathways/Mellon Student Fellows in Cohort Two presented their research at the HSI Pathways Cross-Institutional Conference in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.  Five CSUN faculty accompanied the students on the trip, and the Student Fellows from Cohort One attended the conference to provide support and insight on their first year of graduate school.  Student Fellows were able to build relationships with students and faculty from our seven partner campuses.  You can read more about the conference here.

HSI Pathways Welcomes Interim Dean Stallcup as PI

Dean Elizabeth Say, who served as PI for the first three years of HSI Pathways at CSUN, has accepted a position as Interim Provost at Cal State Channel Islands.  Student Fellows are grateful to her for her stewardship of this grant, and have always recognized her support.  Stepping into the role of PI will be Interim Dean Jackie Stallcup, who has been involved in the program since its start at CSUN.  She has served as a Faculty Mentor, attended both cross-institutional conferences, and has represented the Dean’s Office on the interview panel each year.  We welcome Interim Dean Stallcup to her new role!

Cohort Three Begins their Pathway to the Professoriate

Eleven CSUN juniors have been selected for the third cohort of HSI Pathways to the Professoriate at CSUN.  These Student Fellows are pursuing doctoral degrees in the fields of American Studies, Cultural Studies, Ethnic Studies, Gender Studies, History, Rhetoric, and Sociology.  They have been paired with faculty mentors and will begin their research projects this semester.

Students Visit NYU and the University of Pennsylvania

NYU and the University of Pennsylvania hosted five of our Student Fellows, along with Student Fellows from FIU and UTEP, as they visited the campuses.  Students met with faculty and current graduate students, including Brian Mercado, CSUN Class of 2018, who is currently a doctoral student in the Sociology program at the CUNY Graduate Center. They took campus tours and met with Aida Gureghian, HSI Pathways Coordinator at NYU, and Pat Rea, HSI Coordinator at the University of Pennsylvania.  The students enjoyed visiting the Met, seeing New York City, and exploring historical sites in Philadelphia.

UC Berkeley and UC Davis hosted six of our Student Fellows, along with Student Fellows from FIU and UTEP, as they visited the campuses.  Students met with faculty and current graduate students, including Hermes Rocha, CSUN Class of 2018, who is currently a doctoral student in the Philosophy program.  They took campus tours and met with Alberto Ledesma, HSI Pathways Coordinator at UC Berkeley, and Josephine Moreno, HSI Coordinator at UC Davis. Students Visit Northwestern University

Northwestern University hosted five of our Student Fellows, along with Students Fellows from FIU and UTEP, as they visited the campus.  Students met with faculty and current graduate students, including Yaquelin Morales, CSUN Class of 2018, who is currently a doctoral student in the Performance Studies program.  They took a campus tour and met with Damon Williams, HSI Pathways Coordinator at Northwestern.  The students enjoyed exploring Chicago, trying Chicago-style pizza and visiting the Field Museum.

Lyrianne Gonzalez (History) and Hannah Mangum (Sociology) have been named University Scholars at CSUN for the 2018-2019 academic year. The University Scholarship is awarded to students who excel academically and who wish to develop a mentoring relationship with a faculty mentor.

Twenty HSI Pathways Student Fellows from three HSI campuses applied to graduate programs this year, and all 20 will be matriculating into graduate programs during the 2018-2019 academic year. Student Fellow Shawntel Barreiro was named this year’s Wolfson Scholar, the top honor given to a graduating senior at CSUN.  Read about this in CSUN Today or watch her Wolfson Video. With more than 10,000 students graduating this year, this is an exceptional achievement.

Hannah Mangum (Sociology) and Gema Ludisaca English Literature) have been named Sally Casanova Pre-Doctoral Scholars for the 2018-2019 academic year. Moshoula Capous-Desyllas and Jackie Stallcup, two of our HSI Pathways/Mellon Faculty Mentors, will be serving as advisors on their research projects.

At a luncheon on April 20th, faculty, staff, and administrators gathered to honor the Student Fellows graduating from CSUN this Spring.  Each graduate invited faculty who have been instrumental to their academic success, and the students heard congratulations from President Harrison, Dean Say, guests from NYU and Penn, and keynote speaker Jose Galvan, Professor Emeritus at Cal State Los Angeles and former Vice President & Dean

Congratulations are in order for the first cohort of HSI Pathways at CSUN! Eight Student Fellows applied to doctoral programs this year, and all eight were admitted to programs with five years of full funding. Eight HSI Pathways/Mellon Student Fellows presented their research at the University of Pennsylvania this week.  They were participating in the HSI Pathways Cross-Institutional Conference, which was attended by faculty from eight institutions.  The students had a chance to network and receive feedback, as well as attend panels on life as a graduate student.

After a rigorous application process, nine CSUN juniors were selected to comprise the second cohort of HIS Pathways.  Each student fellow has been matched with a faculty mentor at CSUN, and we look forward to working with them over the next two years.

Student Fellows Complete Their Summer Seminar

HSI Pathways/Mellon Student Fellows lived on campus for six weeks this summer to attend an immersive Seminar that prepared them for application to and success in graduate school.  Elizabeth Calzada sums it up: “Over six weeks I not only cultivated knowledge but I started to believe in my future as a scholar.”  Brian Mercado was grateful for the expertise of so many campus partners who participated in the Seminar: “Being able to hear the stories and paths taken by our various presenters, guest speakers, and lunch guests made the task ahead of us seem more manageable, more human.” You can read more about the Student Fellows’ experiences during the Summer Seminar on our blog.

Two Student Fellows Named Sally Casanova Scholars

Congratulations to Shawntel Barreiro and Carla Martinez, who were selected from a pool of undergraduate and graduate student applicants throughout the California State University system for the California Pre-Doctoral Program! As Sally Casanova Scholars in this program, they will receive funding to explore doctoral programs and conduct their research.

Several Student Fellows participated in CSUN’s 21st Annual Research & Creative Works Symposium. Congratulations to Shawntel Barreiro, who won First Place for Undergraduate Poster for “Linguistic Perspectives on the Current Mohegan Language Revival” and Eryn Talevich, who won 2nd place within the College of Social and Behavioral Sciences for her talk “Telling Fortunes.” Read about Shawntel’s experience.

CSUN Welcomes First Cohort of HSI Pathways/Mellon Student Fellows

At a Kickoff Luncheon at the Orange Grove Bistro, 10 CSUN juniors were inducted as HSI Pathways/Mellon Student Fellows. They were congratulated by Chief Diversity Officer Raji Rhys and Vice President for Student Affairs Dr. William Watkins, and were welcomed by CSUN’s project lead Dean Elizabeth Say.  Representatives from the Penn Center for Minority Serving Institutions joined by video conferencing to welcome the Student Fellows, who met their Faculty Mentors for the first time at the event.
