2017 Southwest Seminar in Continental Philosophy

The CSUN Department of Philosophy, with the support of the Queer Studies program, is pleased to host the 2017 Southwest Seminar in Continental Philosophy. The event will offer presentations from nearly 50 philosophers from the southwestern region and beyond. 

The event will also feature keynote addresses from Dr. Talia Mae Bettcher (Cal State LA) ("The Phenomenology of Em-personation: What Transphobia Shows about Transition”) and Dr. Lisa Guenther (Vanderbilt University) (“Unmaking and Remaking the World in Long-Term Solitary Confinement”).  Read more

Jack Kirby @ 100 Exhibition

“Jack Kirby @ 100,” an exhibit of comics and prints at the Oviatt Library, commemorates the centenary of the famed artist, known for co-creating the Marvel Universe. Working across half a century of comics in diverse genres, Kirby (b. Jacob Kurtzberg, 1917-1994) is the quintessential American comic book creator, and one of the most imitated artists in American popular culture. CSUN affirmed Kirby’s legacy in 2015 with an Art Galleries exhibition, _Comic Book Apocalypse_, and is continuing the celebration this term with “Jack Kirby @ 100,” in time for the 100th anniversary of his birth. “Jack Kirby @ 100,” an exhibit of comics and prints at the Oviatt Library, commemorates the centenary of the famed artist, known for co-creating the Marvel Universe. Working across half a century of comics in diverse genres, Kirby (b. Jacob Kurtzberg, 1917-1994) is the quintessential American comic book creator, and one of the most imitated artists in American popular culture. To launch the show, curator Charles Hatfield will host a panel with comics creators Mark Badger and Tony Puryear on August 28th, which is Kirby's 100th birthday. Mehrzad Boroujerdi

Mehrzad Boroujerdi is Professor of Political Science and O’Hanley Faculty Scholar at Syracuse University. He is currently a Fellow of the American Council on Education in residence at California State University, Northridge as well as a visiting scholar at UCLA’s Center for Near Eastern Studies. Dr. Boroujerdi’s research centers on intellectual and political history of modern Iran. Read more
