AAS 440: Urbanization and Asian American Communities

AAS 440 examines the development of Asian American communities in the U.S. from 1850 to present. We pay particular attention first to the impact of Asian American communities on the economic, social, cultural and political development of urban Southern California and on the relationship between Asian American communities and other ethnic communities. We also examine contemporary issues in these urban communities, such as gentrification, sustainability, social inequality, and community-based activism. Students will complete group projects profiling one of Los Angeles’ Asian American and/or Pacific Islander neighborhoods.
