Community Doula Townhall

February 20, 2020

Good afternoon South Los Angeles/South Bay African American Infant & Maternal Mortality Community Action Team (SLA/SB AAIMM CAT) Members, Partners and Participants

You're Invited to the Community Doula Townhall

Join us for the Women’s Policy Institute (WPI) Los Angeles Health Justice Team Community Doula Townhall on Saturday, February 22, 2020.

After decades of Black women fighting to end the Black Infant and Maternal Mortality crisis, we have entered a new era of opportunity. Though the fight is far from over, there is new support and interest in community, from government and elected officials to work together and with communities to eliminate this health disparity.

There is progressive policy at the state and local level being passed to help protect Black mothers/birthing persons and infants. Just last month, the L.A. County Board of Supervisors approved a motion, authored by Supervisor Hilda Solis and Ridley-Thomas, to extend doula services to some of the most at risk in Los Angeles County. This board motion was presented to the board by the Los Angeles Health Justice Fellows of the Women's Policy Institute as a strategy to reduce the Black/African American infant and maternal mortality and uplift the benefits of the Doula, who provides non-medical support and advocacy for pregnant and parenting women during their pregnancy, labor and post-delivery.

As a next step in the work to ensure Black women in L.A. County have access to doula services, the Los Angeles Health Justice WPI Fellows in collaboration and sponsorship with the Women’s Foundation of California and Kaiser Permanente are hosting a Community Doula Townhall. The goal of the townhall is to educate and increase community awareness on the work/role of Doulas and connect African American/Black pregnant women/birthing persons to doulas with the opportunity for on the spot enrollments. We invite all stakeholders, pregnant/parenting mothers/birthing persons, fathers/partners, community members, doulas, birthworkers, and parents in planning to join us.
