A healthy nurse "actively focuses on creating and maintaining a balance and synergy of physical, intellectual, emotional, social, spiritual, personal and professional wellbeing. We feel that nurses are ideally positioned to be the best role models, educators, and advocates of health, safety, and wellness." - The American Nurses Association

The American Nurses Association declared 2017 “The Year of the Healthy Nurse.”  Along these lines, the CSUN Nursing Alumni Association (NAA) set out to fuse these two themes and organize a National Nurses Day event that would not only honor nurses, but would also inspire nurses to nourish wellness and balance in their lives. National Nurses Day was created in 1982 by the American Nurses Association and officially designated at the federal level to take place every May 6th to recognize and celebrate nurses and the nursing profession.

The CSUN event, held on Saturday, May 6th, featured a series of speakers, an array of healthy foods, and the relaxing atmosphere of the CSUN Oasis Wellness Center. CSUN sociology professor and Director of the CSUN Institute for Community Health and Wellbeing Dr. David Boyns guided the group through a morning meditation, Family and Consumer Sciences Nutrition, Dietetics and Food Science professor Dr. Terri Lisagor offered a wealth of nutrition and meal planning tips, and West Hollywood/Los Angeles fitness expert, author, and life coach Regina Santos presented techniques on wellness goal setting.

Attendees included nursing alumni from various CSUN cohorts, current nursing students, alumni from other CSUN alumni chapters, and NAA nursing faculty liaison Dr. Rosine Der-Tavitian. The NAA board hopes the event will become an annual tradition supporting nurses in caring for themselves.
