Programs

CAMINO offers financial and educational opportunities to HHD graduate students in the following programs:

Communication Disorders, Environmental and Occupational

Health, Gerontology, Health Administration, Kinesiology,

Lactation, Nutrition, Physical Therapy and Public Health

Research Assistant

Purpose
The purpose of the Research Assistant positions is to provide valuable paid research opportunities to HHD graduate students in the participating programs. Priority will be given to low-income and/or first-generation status students, as well as those who are engaged in research with Latino populations.

 

Requirements and Pay
Research Assistants will assist a current faculty member engaged in research. Applicants must identify their chosen faculty member and receive permission to work with them prior to applying and submit a complete application packet. This position pays $15.00 per hour, maximum of 10 hours of work per week, over 15 weeks each semester. These are paid positions and will not be considered as internship opportunities.

Peer Mentor/Mentee

Purpose
The purpose of the Peer Mentor Program is to help HHD graduate students in the participating programs build a community where they can access academic support, professional development, and service-learning activities, as well as engage in peer mentorship with fun and rewarding networking opportunities. 

The Peer Mentor Program pairs 2nd year/continuing graduate students with 1st year students from their respective HHD graduate programs. Priority will be given to low-income and/or first-generation graduate students and Hispanic/Latino students with a) professional experience or growth potential, b) leadership, c) professionalism and maturity.

 

Requirements and Pay

Mentors must be in good academic standing (minimum 3.5 GPA) and submit a complete application packet.  Mentors will be required to attend designated activities throughout the academic year, as well as meet with and advise their mentees. Mentors will be paid $15 per hour for up to 10 hours a week. These are paid positions and will not be considered as internship opportunities. Mentees will receive a $200 stipend at the end of the academic year.

Peer Tutor

Purpose
The purpose of the Peer Tutor positions is to provide paid tutoring opportunities to HHD graduate students in the participating programs. Tutors will provide small group and one-on-one tutoring to provide academic support in classes that traditionally give HHD graduate students the most difficulty, including statistics and writing. Priority will be given to low-income and/or first-generation status students and Hispanic/Latino students with a) professional experience, b) leadership, c) professionalism and maturity.

 

Requirements and Pay

Thesis Talks

Thesis Talks are designed to be 8-minute presentations by HHD graduate student researchers that will engage anaudience using dynamic photos, key charts, graphs, and other multimedia tools to share their research in relatable terms. By breaking the “traditional” academic conference format, graduate students will learn to share their work in a relevant and compelling manner that appeals to broader audiences while really elevating their public speaking skills. Priority will be given to low-income and/or first-generation graduate students and Hispanic/Latino students.

 

Requirements and Pay                                                                                 

Participants must be a graduate student in one of the participating programs and must submit a complete application packet.Students who attend all the required trainings and who present at Thesis Talks as part of the Research and Creative Works Symposium will receive a $200 stipend.

NIH

CAMINO offers (4) graduate student stipends to attend the NIH Hispanic Serving Health Profession Schools (NIH/HSHPS) Data Systems Workshop held each summer in Washington, D.C. We encourage individuals who have an interest in Hispanic health research to take advantage of this opportunity.

 

Requirements:

Participants must be a graduate student in one of the participating programs and must submit a complete application packet. Priority will be given to first-generation students and students with experience in or plans to engage in Hispanic-focused research.

Scholarships

Purpose
The purpose of this scholarship is to provide financial assistance to HHD students pursuing a graduate degree in one of the participating programs.

 

Requirements:
Applicants must have at least a 3.0 GPA in all graduate coursework. Priority will be given to low-income and/or first-generation graduate students with a) commitment to research and scholarly activities, b) professional experience or growth potential, c) leadership, d) professionalism and maturity, and e) outstanding clinical potential (if applicable).

Leadership Speaker Series

At least 2 events will be held per year (1/semester) where healthcare industry leaders will speak to students on campus on topics ranging from launching and maintaining a successful career to emerging healthcare needs.

New Graduate Courses

College-Wide elective:

HHD 513: Leadership/Professional Competencies for Health and Human Development Disciplines

3 unit class that will cover leadership skills, financial management, evidence-based practices, emotional intelligence in the workplace, strategic planning, health care ethics, and how to create a culturally competent workplace/organization.

Lactation Education Graduate Certificate

HSCI 534: Lactation Education for the Healthcare Professional

3 unit Lactation Education class to confer in Certificate in Lactation Education to students working toward Master’s degrees in Public Health and Dietetics.

3 unit class that will help graduate students become confident and gain the knowledge to communicate with the Spanish-speaking community in the health care environment
