At any school, your financial need is determined by the standard Cost of Attendance (COA) minus your Student Aid Index (SAI). The federal government standardizes the exact calculations used to determine your SAI. Your SAI is assessed in the same way regardless of the school you attend, but the actual awards vary by institution because of the differences in cost.
Cost of Attendance (COA) minus Student Aid Index (SAI) = Financial Need

For Informational purposes only: In accordance with the California Assembly Bill 990 and the California Senate Bill 467, California State University, Northridge provides the typical market cost of the following:
1 Bedroom Apartment: $1,966.79 per month
2 Bedroom Apartment: $2,610.49 per month
Room rental in a private home: $1,100 per month
All expenses reflect estimated costs for a typical student, but actual costs can vary for individual students. Many students living off-campus have roommates, which decreases their housing costs. California State University, Northridge strongly encourages prospective students and their families to consider how their own costs might differ from the estimates provided which may include additional costs you will incur or how your veteran status might affect costs.
*Data sources: US Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) 2026 Small Area Fair Market Rents for rentals within 3 miles of CSUN campus. In addition, some components are based on data collected by the California Student Aid Commission. For on-campus housing and food, CSUN uses the actual figure for on-campus housing for a double occupancy room without a kitchen with an all-access meal plan.
*The CSU makes every effort to keep student costs to a minimum. Fees listed in published schedules or student accounts may need to be increased when public funding is inadequate. Therefore, CSU must reserve the right, even after fees are initial charged or initial fee payments are made, to increase or modify any listed fees. All listed fees, other than mandatory systemwide fees, are subject to change without notice, until the date when instruction for a particular semester or quarter has begun. All CSU listed fees should be regarded as estimates that are subject to change upon approval by the Board of Trustees, the Chancellor, or the Presidents, as appropriate. Changes in mandatory systemwide fees will be made in accordance with the requirements of the Working Families Student Fee Transparency and Accountability Act (Sections 66028 - 66028.6 of the Education Code).
To view your actual fee charge, go to the CSUN Portal.
