Faculty/Staff Health and Safety

Health and Safety Protocols, Forms

The requirements in this section were updated on July 1, 2021.

Employee Requirements and Responsibilities

All employees returning to campus have a collective responsibility to conduct their work in a manner which promotes their personal health and safety, as well as that of their co-workers and students. You will be responsible for:
  • completing CSUN’s on-line Return to Campus training module before performing any work on campus
  • completing the daily health screening survey each day working on campus
  • staying home if sick
  • wearing a face covering indoors (including vehicles and carts on campus)
  • washing hands regularly

Training

Per California OSHA requirements, all employees and students will be required to complete the Return to Campus training prior to working on campus. All employees are expected to complete this training no later than August 10, 2021. The training covers campus safety protocols, what the campus is doing to keep our population safe and administrator expectations.

The training is available on CSU Learn or via this shortcut. From this link, you will select “Northridge” from the drop down and then sign-in with your CSUN credentials. Then select the “Start” button to view the training.

Daily Health Screening

  • You will need to conduct a self-screening survey before coming to campus each day. The self-screening survey is available on the MyNorthridge portal, the CSUN app, and https://www.csun.edu/fall-2021-planning-gateway.
  • The self-screening survey will ask you a series of health-related questions. You will also be required to take your temperature as part of the screening.
  • If your temperature is below 100.4 and the answers to all questions are “no,” you will be sent an e-mail clearing you to come to campus for the day. Forward your clearance e-mail to your designated appropriate administrator or Department COVID Coordinator (as determined by your department).
  • If your temperature is at 100.4 or above and/or the answer to any question is yes, do not come to work. You will receive an e-mail advising you are not cleared to come to campus, to call your doctor for medical advice, and connect with your appropriate administrator to discuss and inquire about leave options.
  • Some campus units will be implementing or continuing daily non-contact temperature screening at an entry control site on entry. These include the Klotz Student Health Center, and the Department of Athletics.
  • If you need a thermometer to be able to complete the self-screening survey, you may request one through your Department COVID Coordinator.

Stay home if you are sick

  • Stay at home (except to get medical care). Call your doctor if you have a fever of 100.4 degrees F or more, cough, shortness of breath or difficulty breathing; or, if you have a new onset of fever, chills, muscle pain, sore throat, loss of sense of taste or smell, diarrhea, unusual rash, or other flu-like symptoms. Please contact your appropriate administrator and advise of your absence.

Face Coverings

  • Employees shall have and wear an acceptable face covering indoors while on campus. Face covering can be removed outdoors, in a private office with the door closed, or when eating/drinking.
  • All employees will be provided five face coverings by their respective offices and unvaccinated employees will be provided a N95 respirator upon request, including the required training for the voluntary use of N95 respirators.
  • If you forget your face covering, please get a disposable face covering from the location designated by your Department COVID Coordinator.
  • Acceptable face coverings must:
    • Cover the nose and mouth openings
    • Fit snuggly against the face with secured ties/ear loops
    • Include at least two layers of fabric
    • Allow breathing without restriction
    • Is able to be laundered/machine dried without damage or change to shape
  • Face covering should be washed frequently and at least on a daily basis.

Hygiene

  • Wash hands frequently with soap and water for at least 20 seconds
  • Use hand sanitizer (w/minimum 60% alcohol content) when hand washing is not possible
  • Avoid touching your eyes, nose, or face.
  • Cover coughs/sneezes with disposable tissues, if disposable tissues are not available use the inside of your elbow to cover coughs/sneezes.

Breaks/Lunch

  • Employees are encouraged to eat their lunch outside to the greatest extent possible. Eating indoors is discouraged; however, if employees do so, it is acceptable in well-ventilated private offices and/or at cubicle desks. While indoor communal eating is strongly discouraged, Cal OSHA requires 6’ distancing should employees choose to eat together (subject to change upon CSU vaccination attestation policy).
  • Guidelines for Limited Breakroom Use:
    • You will need access to hand washing locations and/or hand sanitizer.
    • Frequent cleaning and sanitation of high contact surfaces is essential to help reduce the possibility of virus transmission in a high contact touch environment. You will need to sanitize (e.g. appliance handles, control panels) before and after every use .
    • All food and drink items must be removed at the end of your day.
      • No communal food items may be stored in the breakroom or refrigerators, such as, salt/pepper, ketchup/mustard/mayonnaise
    • All shared flatware/silverware, plates, glasses/cups, utensils, and cookware will be removed.
    • Ask your COVID-19 Coordinator on process for the cleaning personal items, such as dishes and other utensils

Sanitization

  • Sanitize authorized break/lunch spaces daily with approved/provided sanitizer and paper towels before and after use.
  • Sanitize shared equipment (e.g. computer keyboards, mice, appliances, etc.) with approved/provided sanitizer and paper towels each morning and after each use.
  • Use hand sanitizer before using computers/shared equipment.
  • Sanitize shared carts/equipment/computers/copiers/printers with approved/provided sanitizer and paper towels before and after each use.
  • Sanitize other shared areas such as reception counters, reception phones, and door knobs with approved/provided sanitizer frequently.
  • Note: You must not spray cleaner directly on computer keyboards or KeyWatcher interface panels. Spray sanitizer on a paper towel first, then wipe.

Health and Safety Resources

Department COVID Coordinator

Each department has designated a manager (MPP) to serve as the Department COVID Coordinator. Department COVID Coordinators will be responsible for ensuring work spaces meet safety standards and expectations. COVID Coordinators will also ensure appropriate safety supplies are within each work space which include but are not limited to plexiglass workspace dividers, queue control stanchions, standard signage and floor decals, hand sanitizer and extra disposable face coverings.

Ambassador Program

The University Student Union (USU) will operate and staff a COVID Mitigation Ambassador outreach program for the Fall 21 semester. The mission of the program will be to provide disposable masks (should campus community members forget their own), provide personal hand sanitizer, provide campus information, and continually promote campus COVID mitigation practices, including sharing CDC guidance on encouraging vaccination. Additionally, the student ambassadors will answer general questions, provide maps, and/or resource materials as deemed appropriate.

Employee Support

Employees may refer to the signage placed around campus and in office spaces/classrooms to remind all visitors/colleagues of the safety protocols. Additionally, tools will be developed to assist employees in engaging in discussions with all visitors/customers, including students on safety expectations. Employees are also encouraged to reach out to their appropriate administrator for support.

Additionally, our Human Resources team will continue to be available to managers and employees to assist with resources available to employees specific to COVID-19. These include but are not limited to leave options, accommodations, telecommute options, working effectively and safely at home, pay check information, and the Employee Assistance Program (EAP). More information on these resources can continue to be found on the COVID-19 Information for Faculty and Staff webpage.

Mental Health Resources

As a CSUN employee you and anyone living in your household are eligible to receive support from our Employee Assistance Program (LifeMatters). Life Matters provides short-term counseling services, webinars, as well as a multitude of resources. Please visit https://www.csun.edu/benefits/lifematters-eap.

Additionally, LifeMatters will be hosting virtual support sessions for our campus community to address anxiety with change and transition to on campus work over the summer.

Reporting Concerns

Concerns of non-compliance of safety protocols may be reported to Environmental Health and Safety at ehs@csun.edu or 818-677-2401.

COVID-19 Vaccinations and Testing

The CSU has indicated the COVID-19 vaccine will be mandated for all students and employees by the start of the Fall semester or upon FDA approval of non-emergency use (whichever is later). Exemptions will be provided for medical and/or religious reasons. The CSU is currently meeting with student groups and labor unions. We will share more information when it is available.

Please visit this page for updates on employee COVID-19 vaccination information.

Reporting COVID Cases and/or Potential Exposure

CSUN cares about your health and safety and continues to track reported COVID cases among members of our campus community, including students, faculty, and staff. A dashboard of reported cases may be accessed at https://www.csun.edu/csunasone/health-and-safety. The dashboard provides summary date only—no individual information is included.

If you believe you have been exposed to COVID-19, even if you have not been on campus, please complete the Faculty and Staff Reporting Form.

Thereafter, you will be contacted by a Human Resources employee to conduct an intake and advise you of relevant quarantine protocols. Additionally, in compliance with California Assembly Bill 685, Human Resources will send e-mail notifications on potential exposure in specified building with instructions on your rights.

Contact Tracing / Quarantine Guidelines

The Klotz Student Health Center has trained contact tracers who will conduct contact tracing for the campus community. Employees will be advised to quarantine based on the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health guidance. The university will monitor and update guidance as changes are made by LACDPH.
  • Scenario 1 - If exposure to someone with COVID-19, employee will be advised they may not return to campus for 10 days from last date of exposure and to consult with their physician (monitor symptoms days 11-14). If an employee has been fully vaccinated (two weeks after final shot) there is no quarantine requirement.
  • Scenario 2 - If positive COVID test, employee will be advised they may not return to campus for 10 days from first day of symptoms and 24 hours with no symptoms without fever-reducing medication, or if no symptoms, 10 days after test date and to consult with their physician.
  • Scenario 3 – If exposure scenario becomes COVID-19 positive at a later date, quarantine timelines will be updated to be consisted with scenario 2.

COVID Dashboard

CSUN cares about your health and safety and continues to track reported COVID-19 cases among members of our campus community, including students, faculty, and staff. To prevent COVID-19 transmission, most campus classes and activities remain virtual, and, to date, no one at CSUN has been infected on campus. If someone on campus is reported to have COVID-19, CSUN will work with Los Angeles County Department of Public Health to identify if they have had any close contacts while here. Close contacts are persons who have been closer than 6 feet to a COVID-infected individual for 15 minutes or more.) If so, CSUN will confidentially notify these close contacts, and ask them to call their doctor and self-quarantine for 14 days. Fortunately, CDC-recommended preventive measures such as frequent handwashing, physical distancing, and face coverings can help to protect you from COVID transmission.

Reported Cases (updated weekly, data current through 6/21/21) Number of cases reported due to on-campus exposure Contact identification for on-campus exposure
Students 148 6 Completed
Employees 111 0 Completed
Contract/Affiliate (non-employees) 13 0 Completed

CSUN shares information about COVID-19 cases reported to CSUN by an individual or by a public health official. However, to preserve patient confidentiality, CSUN does not report identifiable names, affiliations or health conditions of students, faculty or staff who test positive for COVID-19. The university will also not disclose the specific location of the individual who was infected for privacy reasons. If needed, all campus locations possibly exposed will be appropriately cleaned and disinfected before reopening. Your best protection from COVID-19 is to maintain healthy practices such as physical distancing, wearing a face covering and washing your hands frequently as the best methods to lower your risk when you are outside your home.

If you are diagnosed with COVID-19 by your doctor, even if you haven’t been on campus, please notify CSUN Pandemic Manager, Yolanda Chassiakos, MD, by emailing linda.reid.chassiakos@csun.edu and providing a contact phone number where you can be reached. Your information will remain confidential at the Klotz Student Health Center, and Klotz will make a confidential courtesy call to confirm that you have necessary healthcare and will help you identify any close contacts on campus for whom quarantine and testing are recommended.
