CSUN students excel in Unmanned Aerial Vehicle Competition

06.13.2012 Unmanned Aerial Systems team that took second place

CSUN was the top placing US entry, behind the Universite de Sherbrooke (Montreal, Canada), and took second place overall at the 10th International "Unmanned Aerial System (UAS)" competition hosted by the Association for Unmanned Vehicle Systems International (AUVSI) with support from ONR and Navair at the PAX River Naval Air Station in Maryland (June 13 -17).

 
The competition objectives are for an unmanned aircraft to be launched, and fly autonomously while demonstrating waypoint navigation, search for and assessment of a series of man-made objects prior to returning to the launch point for landing.  Participants were evaluated in three areas:
 
   Journal Paper (Systems Design Presentation - 25%)
   Oral Presentation (Flight Readiness Review - 25%)
   Flight Demonstration - 50%
 
CSUN placed in the top 6 in all three categories; scoring details have not yet been published.
 
Delhi Technological University (New Delhi, India), Embry Riddle Aeronautical University (Florida), Kansas State and Cornell rounded out the overall top 6 positions.

I just received this piece of good news from Jonathan Gjesmo and the ME student team who took first place in the ASME design competition at CSU Maritime Academy earlier this week.
