Smart Energy Management Systems (SHEMS)

Faculty Advisor: Dr. Kourosh Sedghisigarchi

Project Description:

The objective of this project was to build a user friendly, power monitoring and controlling device located between the wall socket and an appliances in order to monitor the device power/energy consumption and turn the device on or off, all from a mobile app. The user will be able to monitor the energy consumption of each electric load at the corresponding outlet. In addition, each device can be turned on or off remotely using the app in order to minimize the energy consumption. The data for each module will be sampled and saved on a cloud database to be utilized for further analysis. Each module will calculate the device power factor to determine how efficient it operates. This project includes hardware and software development tasks as well as a good understanding of power system fundamental concepts. The figure above shows the first version of the system designed and developed by the first team who won the CECS second place presentation award at senior design showcase.
