Project CREATE: Preparing Culturally Responsive Early Educators in Teacher Education

Congratulations to Dr. Zhen Chai and the rest of the Project CREATE team for receiving a United States Department of Education award in the amount of $1.1 million. The purpose of this project is to support a newly modified Early Childhood Special Education Preliminary Credential Program and to prepare competent culturally responsive early childhood special educators/early interventionists who will be eligible for the California Preliminary Education Specialist Credential. Fatmana Kara Deniz

Fatmana Kara Deniz is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Special Education. Her research focuses on three main areas: (1) understanding teachers’ perceptions of cognitive autonomy-supportive teaching, (2) investigating evidence-based practices to support the development of cognitive autonomy skills for children/youth with and without disabilities and for whom English is not their first language, and (3) training teachers to use evidence-based practices to enhance student cognitive autonomy skills within the MTSS Framework. With a focus on literacy as a social justice issue, Renee Ziolkowska (Department of Elementary Education), and Vanessa Goodwin, Rachel Friedman Narr and Sue Sears (Department of Special Education) are working with faculty from UCLA, and other CSU campuses in the Los Angeles basin, to strengthen educational support for diverse students with a wide range of learning needs, including those with dyslexia. Celebrating National Special Education Day

National Special Education Day is celebrated on December 2. In 1975, President Ford signed our nation’s first federal special education law, the Individuals with Disabilities Act. This law made public education available to all eligible children with disabilities across the nation and ensured that proper services were provided to those children.  Read more
