Welcome back to an unexpected start to Spring 2022! The Michael D. Eisner College of Education will continue to offer outstanding programs despite the challenges we currently face due to the pandemic. As we adjust to the news that CSUN will pivot to virtual instruction due to the Omicron surge for the first 3 weeks of spring semester, our college top priorities remain the safety and well-being of our students, staff, faculty, and the community we serve, and the ongoing success of our students and programs. Classes in our college will all be offered through virtual instruction in the first three weeks of the semester, from Monday, January 24th until Monday, February 14th. Classes will return to the originally published class modality for spring semester (in-person, hybrid, HyFlex, virtual, etc.) starting February 14th, assuming safety permits. Please stay in close communication with instructors and departments regarding class status. Due to the severity of the ongoing Omicron surge, many offices in the College of Education will be working mostly remotely during this time. Please know that all staff and departments are actively working virtually during regular hours Monday through Friday from now until February 14th to support our students and the successful start of our Spring semester. Faculty will also be available to virtually support students starting January 19th. Please use our website for information on how to connect with departments and faculty virtually. Modified on campus in-person College of Education staffing will be offered by the Dean’s Office and Credential Office while classes remain virtual from January 26 through February 11th. Our situation on campus is fluid, so please be aware that changes could occur based on safety concerns in the future. Updated campus safety information to support faculty, staff, and students, including information about requirements for COVID testing, vaccinations, booster shots, and masks can be found at MATADORS FORWARD. In addition, self-care for faculty, staff, students, and the schools and the community we serve remain a top priority while many ongoing stressors confront us. Please watch for weekly information about resources for COVID recovery and well-being posted on our self-care website and through messaging regarding the CSUN Campus Care Recovery Plan. We seek the future with compassion, hope, and optimism, and look forward to moving college operations and many classes to an in-person format in the Spring 2022 semester. UC/CSU California Collaborative for Neurodiversity and Learning

With a focus on literacy as a social justice issue, Renee Ziolkowska (Department of Elementary Education), and Vanessa Goodwin, Rachel Friedman Narr and Sue Sears (Department of Special Education) are working with faculty from UCLA, and other CSU campuses in the Los Angeles basin, to strengthen educational support for diverse students with a wide range of learning needs, including those with dyslexia. Celebrating National Special Education Day

National Special Education Day is celebrated on December 2. In 1975, President Ford signed our nation’s first federal special education law, the Individuals with Disabilities Act. This law made public education available to all eligible children with disabilities across the nation and ensured that proper services were provided to those children.  Read more
