SUN Program

Welcome to our College of Education Self-care Initiative, informally called Self-care for U at Northridge, the SUN Program.

It is so wonderful that you are considering self-care as an important way to care for yourself and keep balance and health in your life. Self-care means taking responsibility for yourself to maintain a healthy and balanced lifestyle at work and in your personal world through individually determined, proactive activities. You are at your best when you attend to yourself in equal measure to others in day-to-day living!

An important form of self-care involves our mindset for self-regulation and  self-perception. How we perceive ourselves and the world around us has an amazing impact on our experience of wellbeing. Dr. Carol Dweck, author of Mindset: The New Psychology of Success , states that “There are two main mindsets we can navigate life with: growth and fixed. Having a growth mindset is essential for success.” She goes on to explain, “as you begin to understand the fixed and growth mindsets, you will see exactly how one thing leads to another— how a belief that your qualities are carved in stone leads to a host of thoughts and actions, and how a belief that your qualities can be cultivated leads to a host of different thoughts and actions, taking you down an entirely different road.” Read more

Self-care and Black History Month

January 30, 2023

February is Black History Month, a time to celebrate African American history and culture, and also  a time to renew our commitment to our own self-care as we engage in antiracist work.  “When we listen to our bodies, hearts, and minds, and consider input from trusted friends, we can find resiliency and renew our lives and work, “ as stated on the Smithsonian National Museum of African American History and Culture website. “We each bring our own beliefs, experiences, and feelings to our anti-racist work – a work that is difficult and demanding. Our ongoing commitment to actively think about and take action against racism, combined with a sense of urgency and deep caring, adds pressure and stress to our daily lives. The emotional impact of this work is real, therefore it is vital that we all practice ‘self-care’ to benefit our overall health and quality of life.” Read more
