Self-Care and taking a mental rest

July 25, 2022

Dear College of Education Community,

Sometimes we just need to take a mental rest. A recent meditation on the CSUN Calm App discusses the art of “Boketto.” This is a Japanese word meaning to gaze vacantly into the distance without thinking about anything specific. We can find lots of resources that identify how to be productive. But when we are feeling stressed and psychologically exhausted, it’s important to give ourselves time to stop and allow ourselves to just enjoy the moment and do nothing. According to Jon Kabat Zimm, “Non-doing has nothing to do with being indolent or passive. Quite the contrary. It takes great courage and energy to cultivate non-doing, both in stillness and in activity.” And as we quiet our minds and bodies, we can return to our better selves.

All CSUN employees, including paid student assistants, have free access to the Calm app for phones! To enjoy this meditation on “Boketto”, go to the Calm app, open meditations called “Daily Calm” by Tamara Levitt, and look for last Friday’s meditation called Boketto under Recent Daily Calms. There is a new 10 minute meditation at the Daily Calm location daily for you to enjoy.

Don’t have free access to the calm app for your phone yet? Go to the attachment for instructions.

Enjoy a moment of non-doing. You deserve it!

Warmly,
Shari
