SUN Program

Welcome to our College of Education Self-care Initiative, informally called Self-care for U at Northridge, the SUN Program.

It is so wonderful that you are considering self-care as an important way to care for yourself and keep balance and health in your life. Self-care means taking responsibility for yourself to maintain a healthy and balanced lifestyle at work and in your personal world through individually determined, proactive activities. You are at your best when you attend to yourself in equal measure to others in day-to-day living!

The practice of self-compassion offers a way to engage in healing and self-care during challenging times. Our world at this moment is full of so many challenges, hate, and ugliness, which may be causing many of us to be negatively impacted and to suffer. We also may be confronted by difficulties in our individual lives that leave us feeling down and discouraged. Dr. Kristin Neff, Associate Professor of Human Development and Culture, University of Texas at Austin, is an expert in the practice of self-compassion.  Read more

Self-care during times of war

As wars escalate in the Middle East, witnessing war-time violence can trigger anxiety, depression, and traumatic stress, and can have a significant impact on our quality of life as well as our physical health. Many of us are also actively engaged in activities related to these wars. This is a reminder of the importance to maintain balance and take care of ourselves at this critical time in our lives. As one way to do this, CSUN continues to offer the Calm app for phones and computers free for all CSUN employees, including paid student assistants. In addition to short, guided meditations, this app offers specialized music playlists to help with stress and focus, mindful movement video and audio, relaxing sleep stories, tailored content for students and for children, wisdom-filled masterclasses led by experts, and much more.
