Welcome Message from Dean Shari Tarver Behring

August 28, 2017

Greetings as we begin a new academic year and a new time to move forward. And what challenging times these are! As we look to the future and wonder how each of us as unique individuals can make a difference, one impactful way to do this is to become a teacher, administrator, school psychologist, school counselor, Marriage Family Therapist, or Educational Therapist. As one of the highest rated Colleges of Education in the state, the Michael D. Eisner College of Education offers professional preparation in all of these areas, as well as an undergraduate degree in one of the top Deaf Studies programs in the country.

MAKING A DIFFERENCE IN THE MICHAEL D. EISNER COLLEGE OF EDUCATION

Students can look forward to excellent educational opportunities that promote equity and diversity, cutting edge instruction in programs with state and national accreditation, and strong community and school partnership experiences in leadership, teaching and counseling under the guidance of our exceptionally well trained and caring faculty.

And our faculty are some of the best, with many holding leadership roles and receiving accolades for their pioneering contributions to the field. As examples, Wendy Murawski, a faculty from our Department of Special Education, was recently named this year's recipient of the Teacher Education Division of the Council for Exceptional Children Distinguished Service Award; another faculty, Diane Gehart, has been recognized as the Distinguished Faculty of the year by the California Division of the American Association for Marriage and Family Therapy; Clara Park joined other esteemed colleagues in the College of Education as the latest Blenda J. Wilson Diversity in Education Award for her work in leadership, teaching, research, and community service which promotes the academic success of diverse students in grades K-12, and at the university.

Because we have such outstanding programs and faculty, our students in the Michael D. Eisner College of Education programs are recognized as outstanding in the field and, as a result, our graduates easily obtain employment. For the second year in a row, our college had the most alumni receive the 2017 Los Angeles Unified School District Teachers of the Year, with five awarded, in comparison to other teacher training programs in Los Angeles area. In addition, two of our credential graduates were recently honored as the LAUSD's 2017-18 Rookie of the Year at the LA Dodger Stadium. And Isela Lieber, who earned a teaching credential from our Department of Secondary Education and a Masters degree from our Department of Educational Leadership and Policies, was selected as one five California State Teachers of the Year. These are just a few examples of how our graduates go on to become leaders who are making a difference.

So why not come join one of our exciting and rewarding programs and see how you can make a difference, too!

And to our faculty, staff, and continuing students who are already making a difference: Welcome back to an exciting new Academic Year!

Shari Tarver Behring, Interim Dean of the Michael D. Eisner College of Education
