Keynote Presentation:  Empowering Grandparents: Triple P – Positive Parenting Program

Dr. Susan Love, Department of Social Work;California State University, Northridge

  • Triple P addresses child behavioral and emotional problems by giving parents proven skills to build stronger families. The program has been shown to work across cultures, socio- economic groups and family structures. Dr. Love’s research found the program has successfully improved the lives of highly vulnerable parents and children in Los Angeles. She will present her study and what she learned.

Supporting Children Dealing with Trauma: Considerations for Professionals and Relative Caregivers

  • Julie Gould, LCSW and Katie Mortimer, LCSW; Department of Social Work; California State University, Northridge. This presentation will address considerations for professionals and relative caregivers in supporting children who have experienced trauma as well as trauma informed strategies for successful professional and caregiver teaming.**NOTE: Only offered during the morning Breakout Session**

  • Sandy Logan; Prevention Coordinator, National Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence of the San Fernando Valley. An open discussion on current drug trends that are influencing our youth.

 Resource Family Approval:  Making It Work for Kinship Families

  • Susan Abrams, Esq., Policy Director; Children’s Law Center and Elise N. Weinberg, Esq., Policy Attorney; Alliance for Children’s Rights. On January 1, 2017 California implemented Resource Family Approval, a new process that caregivers must complete to care for a child in foster care. Relatives are critical to the success of our foster care system, but they may encounter barriers during the approval process because they often begin caring for children in a moment of crisis and prior to being approved as a resource family. This seminar will review what the new approval process entails and how to overcome barriers in navigating the process.

Foster Youth Education Rights

  • Cindy Rodas; Educational Advocate, Alliance for Children’s Rights. This presentation will address learning about the educational obstacles foster youth face and learning about the legal rights/protections they have in order to overcome them, including special education and general education rights.

Therapeutic Art Activity: Colorful Celebration (Caregivers Only)

  • Vida Liu, MFA; Department of Art; California State University, Northridge. In this presentation, Vida will briefly introduce several visual elements of visual art and principles of design. Participants will then create a collage on canvas using fabric, paper, and/or photos. This activity will reduce stress and enhance focus, attention to detail, and analytical skill building. Participants will have an art piece to bring home.
