From Apartheid to Today: Black Deaf Activism, Culture & Education

Apartheid to Today exhibit, with an academic poster and items from South Africa

Dr. Lissa Stapleton (Faculty, Department of Deaf Studies) along with students in Deaf Studies jointly presented this incredible exhibit at two national professional conferences in November of 2019: 1) The Association for the Study of Higher Education in Portland, Oregon and 2) The Council on International Education and Exchange in New York City. The exhibit was also displayed on the second floor of Manzanita Hall on the CSUN campus from October 1-November 18,2019. The exhibit, entitled From Apartheid to Today: Black Deaf Activism, Culture & Education, is a PhotoVoice Art Exhibit and highlights the community-focused work the students participated in while in South Africa exploring and learning more about equity, justice, resistance and activism. Deaf Studies Trip to Cape Town, South Africa

The Deaf Studies department went to Cape Town, South Africa June 17-July 3. We spent two weeks learning South African Sign Language, visiting Deaf schools and businesses, exploring museums such as the Nelson Mandala Museum and the Slave Lodge as well as spending time with locals in Langa, a local township, and EDeaf, a Deaf vocational school. CSUN Sends its First Deaf Studies Intern to Washington, D.C.

Ana Maritza Rivera

Deaf studies junior Ana Maritza Rivera is a shining example of Matador students and faculty who are driven to serve the Deaf and Latina/o communities. In spring 2019, Rivera will make CSUN history when she goes to Washington, D.C., to participate in the CSUN in D.C. Internship Program and the Congressional Hispanic Caucus Institute (CHCI) Internship Program. Rivera is the university’s first Deaf studies major to participate in the internship. Article from CSUN Today
