Student Safety Training

Scope

This page pertains solely to student trainings. Employees — including student assistants — can receive comparable training through CSU Learn, where they can either search for courses, or curriculums can automatically be assigned to them.

Policy

In accordance with CSU Executive order 1039, all students must be made aware of present and potential hazards in their courses, labs, research activities, shops, and campus-sponsored extracurricular activities (i.e. clubs and organizations). Students must likewise receive safety training where present or potential hazards are identified. Upon request, EH&S can assist departments in conducting hazard assessments to determine the hazards and appropriate training(s). Contact EH&S at ehs@csun.edu for more information.

Record Retention

Student training must be documented and training records must be maintained by the hosting department or college as determined by the Dean or Department Head. Training records shall be maintained for a period of three (3) years with the exception of hazardous waste training which shall be maintained for three (3) years following the student's departure from campus.

The electronic trainings available through CSU Bridge below provide the students with certificates of completion. CSU Bridge does not track student trainings progress. CSU Bridge student training courses linked below are not considered complete until students have provided their faculty supervisor with certificates of completion.

Responsibilities

Training students is the responsibility of the departments or colleges, and may be supplemented by materials provided by EH&S. Training materials developed by faculty members or college/department staff should be reviewed by EH&S prior to implementation to ensure coherence with regulatory standards. Tracking and monitoring student training is the responsibility of the department/college to ensure completion of training in a reasonable timeframe.
