Listing Across GE Areas

Overview

General Education courses should be proposed for the area in which the course SLOs best align with the General Education area SLOs. However, criteria for interdisciplinary courses may allow their inclusion in more than one area of General Education. EPC recognizes the difficulty of substantially meeting the SLOs in multiple GE areas, program SLOs and course SLOs. For most courses, listing across two GE areas is challenging and not recommended.  Listing across three GE areas is rarely found to be feasible. Courses cannot be listed in both Basic Skills and Subject Explorations.

Process

For new courses, check the applicable area(s) in the General Education section of the Curriculum Proposal form. Include all information and attachments required for new course proposals.

To submit a request to add an additional GE area to a previously-certified GE course, initiate a Curriculum Proposal Form for a Course Modification and complete the minimum required fields (indicated with an asterisk). In addition:

  1. Check the current and proposed GE areas.
  2. Provide the current and proposed course description. Remember to include the new GE area at the end of the proposed course description.
  3. In the Justification section of the proposal, briefly explain (in no more than one paragraph) how the course meets the SLOs of the proposed GE area.
  4. Complete the Impact section.
  5. Attach:
    1. Student Learning Outcome Matrix for the proposed GE area demonstrating that the course SLOs meet the required number of the GE area SLOs.
    2. Course syllabus updated to include the relevant SLOs from the proposed GE area (as required by CSUN’s Syllabus Policy).
  6. Enter the Record of Consultation, if applicable.
  7. The proposal must be submitted by the College to EPC according to the normal EPC curriculum calendar.
