A Black History Month Event

"The Five Heartbeats" movie posterQ&A with Special Guest Robert Townsend

Space is limited and registration is required, get your tickets early!

In the early 1960's, a quintet of hopeful young African American men form an amateur vocal group called The Five Heartbeats. After an initially rocky start, the group improve, turn pro, and rise to become a top flight music sensation. Along the way however, the guys learn many hard lessons about the reality of the music industry with it's casual racism and greed while the personal weaknesses of the members threaten to destroy the integrity of the band.

The Department of Africana Studies (AFRS) in collaboration with the Department of Cinema and Television Arts (CTVA) present the films of Robert Townsend, producer, director, writer, actor, and one of the filmmakers responsible for the renaissance of contemporary Black filmmaking. Mr. Townsend’s films will be screened on four Monday evenings during Black History Month, followed by a Q & A session with Mr. Townsend. Moderators for the screenings include Professor Nate Thomas, Dr. Sylvia Macauley, Dr. Frances Gateward, Dr. Theresa White and Dr. Dianah Wynter.

All films are free and will start at 7:30pm in the Alan and Elaine Armer Screening Theater in Manzanita Hall. Light refreshments will be provided after Q & A.

Please bring your ticket with you for entry to the theater and plan to arrive by 7pm or your seat may be given away.
