INTRODUCTION
If you are an international student who did not upload the required admissions documents to your Cal State Apply application, you can — and you must — upload them through the secure CSUN Portal to complete your admission and Form I-20 process.
This guide explains how to prepare your documents and upload them. See the Guidelines for Uploading Documents in Step 5.
Note: You can upload documents to Cal State Apply any time BEFORE submitting your online application. After submitting your application, you must upload any missing documents through the CSUN Portal by the document deadline — June 15 for fall admission and Nov. 15 for spring admission.
Review your CSUN Portal Checklist for any incomplete tasks, including missing documents. If you have not already provided them to the CSUN Office of International Admissions, please upload them as soon as possible so that we can complete your admission process. International students typically need to provide five documents:
- Completed Affidavit of Financial Support (PDF)
- Bank statement or other acceptable financial documents (see Affidavit form)
- Copy of the entire photo page of your passport
- English language proficiency test score
- Unofficial transcripts. Official English translations of your official transcripts should be mailed to the Office of International Admissions, CSUN.
Step 1
Go to the CSUN home page at www.csun.edu and:
- Select the CSUN Portal link from the "MyCSUN" menu in top navigation.
- Log in with your CSUN user ID and password.
If you have not yet activated your CSUN Portal and email accounts, follow the steps at User ID and Password, or contact the Information Technology (IT) Help Center.

Step 2
When the CSUN Portal home page displays:
- Review your Checklist for any incomplete tasks. Missing documents will be listed under the Admissions heading. Please upload them as soon as possible.
- Open the top Student Services tab and menu, then choose the Student Forms link.

Step 3
The Student Forms page displays. The forms on this page were created in OnBase document management software to facilitate our routing and review of your documents. Uploading your documents to the portal is also more secure than emailing them.
Under Student Forms, select International Student Docs.

Step 4
The International Admissions Document Upload Form opens and displays three sections:\
- Student Information: Your name, nine-digit CSUN student ID number, CSUN email address, academic level (UGRD means undergraduate), and major.
- Document Selection: A list of any missing documents that you need to submit.
- Document Upload: To open this section, check one or more boxes for the documents you are ready to upload.
In this example, let’s check the boxes for two documents: the Affidavit of Financial Support (PDF)* and the Bank Statement. Their corresponding document upload boxes open to reveal the "Attach" buttons.
*To complete the Affidavit, please review How to Download and Save a Fillable PDF Form (PDF).
Important Note:
Before proceeding, review the Guidelines for Uploading Documents in Step 5.

Step 5
Please review these instructions BEFORE uploading any documents!
Guidelines for Uploading Documents
- Scan your documents to Portable Document Format (PDF). If you don’t have a scanner or Adobe Acrobat software, this article might be helpful: How to Convert Images to PDF by wikiHow.
- The maximum size for each file is 120 MB.
- If uploading the Affidavit of Financial Support (PDF), ensure page 2 of the form is completed, signed and dated. The cover sheet is not required. Refer to instructions on the form and at How to Download and Save a Fillable PDF Form (PDF).
- How to group documents:
- You must upload documents as separate PDF files if the check boxes on the forms page list them separately. For example, you’ll need to upload the Affidavit of Financial Support and the Bank Statement separately.
- You can attach multiple PDF files for each item if needed. For example, if you attended more than one school, upload each school’s transcript as a separate file in the Unofficial Transcripts section.
- Important! If multiple documents are incorrectly combined in a single PDF file, the document cannot be processed and will not be accepted.
- Make sure you are attaching the correct document for each item.
- Submit documents once only. Uploading duplicate files will delay processing.
- If a document does not meet the requirement when reviewed by a staff member, the item will remain on your CSUN Portal Checklist as not received.
- Ensure that scanned documents are clear, easy to read (legible) and correctly oriented (not upside down or sideways). Refer to the correct and incorrect images below, courtesy of San Jose State University:

Step 6
Once your documents are ready to upload, select the item’s Attach button in the Document Upload section and choose the file from your device.
Then select the Submit button. You should receive an immediate confirmation on the OnBase page.
Tip: Be sure to save a copy of the documents you have uploaded.

Step 7
What to Expect Next
- If your documents were uploaded successfully, the incomplete tasks will disappear from your CSUN Portal Checklist in approximately 10 business days.
- If a problem occurred with the upload or the files were illegible, a staff member from CSUN’s Office of International Admissions will email you. You will also receive a reminder sent to your CSUN Gmail that some documents are still missing.
- Once all required documents are received, your International Admissions advisor will evaluate your application.
- Undergraduate applicants should expect to receive an admission decision after two to three weeks of review.
- Complete graduate applications will be placed in “department review” with the graduate program. The process varies by department, but you can expect four to six weeks of review. Additional materials may be required by your department; review your department’s website or contact your graduate coordinator for details. Department website and contact information can be found in the CSUN Catalog: Graduate Programs.
To return to the CSUN Portal, select the top “CSUN Student” tab in your web browser.
Remember to log out! On your portal home page, select the User icon in the top right corner and then “Tap to sign out” from the drop-down menu.
Good work so far! Feel free to contact International Admissions with any questions.
