Teaching Digital Accessibility to Non-Tech Students

Description
This session will present findings and outcomes from an online course in digital accessibility strategies and policies that was designed for students in non-computer science fields, including business, management, and K-12 education. The course, taught in 2020, introduced students to concepts of disability, inclusion, Universal Design, and digital accessibility, along with an overview of assistive technology, current World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG), and Voluntary Product Accessibility Templates (VPATs). Participants also learned and practiced basic skills in creating accessible content through collaborative projects culminating in an extended individual project to develop an accessibility policy and procedures for an organization or business partner of their choice relevant to their particular field of study. A key aspect of the course was the use of personal narratives by people with disabilities on the serious impact of inaccessible web sites and technology on their day-to-day lives and the importance of accessible design and technologies to remove barriers. Students kept a journal to reflect on those narratives and their growing awareness and understanding of the need for digital accessibility in everyday life. This course was developed as part of a wider effort to promote accessibility and inclusion at Marshall University, a member of TeachAccess.
