Accessibility Overview of Common Component Libraries

An informal case study explores how common component libraries conform to accessibility guidelines and best practices. The presenter will be reviewing a handful of the most popular components from both the Angular Material and the React Native component libraries. Angular Material is used by over 40,000 live websites, and React Native is used by 38% of software developers. In addition, the usage of React Native may be on the rise for developing content that can be deployed on the web instead of for mobile applications. Due to the popularity of these libraries, both developers and accessibility professionals need to understand the current accessibility level of these components, any shortcomings, and best practices for use. This study was born out of experiences working directly with developers implementing these libraries to create web-based content and all of the accessibility issues encountered during their implementation. The presenter will provide an overview of the two libraries, their history, their target audience, and the testing methodology before jumping into discussing the selected components, including code examples and videos of assistive technology interacting with implementations of each component. Then finally, the presenter will discuss the overall accessibility results and recommendations.
