Description
One of the major challenges facing designers is dropping into accessibility and gaining the wisdom of knowing what is good, better, and best design decisions. Applying design thinking approaches to accessibility challenges in designing delightful experiences has yielded an approach to introducing accessibility to designers. Evaluating real-world designs for better accessibility can enlighten designers on how to make better decisions. Practical examples will be a great reference and foundation for designers going forward. Some design decisions are good and follow some of the basic guidelines in the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG), but reading that document feels like a bunch of lawyers are talking to geeks. WCAG is written for front-end developers and subject matter experts, not designers. We found that designers need pictures and sketches of good designs that have been re-designed, and re-sketched to be even better accessible designs. Seeing and participating in the evaluation process is how designers experience the process of making better design decisions. Most UX designers are only taught about color contrast, alt-text, and maybe labels. How to make the best accessible design decisions is not taught in design schools. This fun session will provide a way for designers to not only learn good and better designs but how to even make the best design decisions.
