Exploring Novel Designs for ASL Surveys

Date & Time
Friday, March 17, 2023 - 11:20 AM PST
Location
Orange County 3/4
Description
Surveys and questionnaires are essential tools for gathering data from individuals and groups. Existing survey platforms (e.g. SurveyMonkey, Google Forms, and Qualtrics) conform to established text-based UI conventions and allow users to create surveys, collect responses, and analyze data quickly and easily. Creating surveys in ASL makes it possible to engage the Deaf ASL-signing community ethically, respectfully, and reliably in research and other data collection efforts. However, equivalent platforms and conventions do not exist for those wishing to develop surveys in signed languages, such as American Sign Language (ASL), then collect and analyze participant responses. Instead, ASL surveys are generally built from the ground up for single use cases. In this session, we will discuss our study findings of unique prototype designs for ASL surveys and discuss the benefits of ensuring deaf ASL-signing audiences can engage with online surveys in their natural and primary language. Design considerations such as content-related structural elements, interactive video components, and overall layout will be discussed. Attendees will leave with a clearer sense of emerging design conventions that align with signed languages, as well as new visions and applications for ASL surveys that truly connect with and engage Deaf signing audiences.
