Dev, Browser, or AT: Debugging Web Accessibility Issues

Date & Time
Friday, March 17, 2023 - 2:20 PM PST
Location
Orange County 3/4
Description
CGI will detail the steps we take to perform root cause analysis for a web accessibility issue to determine if the issue is due to a developer, framework, browser, or assistive technology (AT) error. Some of the steps we will discuss include: - Examine the code to determine whether or not it was coded correctly (developer issue) - If the code is correct, check to see if the code comes from a third-party development framework being used and is present in the default/"out-of-the-box" version of the component within the third-party framework (framework issue) - Check the Accessibility API and Accessibility Tree to see if the information is present and mapped correctly (browser issue) - Research to see if the browser has support for the code (browser issue) - Check to see if the browser has any open defects for the lack of support as a reference point to see if they're aware of it, it's being tracked, and if there's any movement on the ticket to get an idea if they have plans to fix it (browser issue) - Launch the AT and test different browser/AT combinations and see if the expected results are announced (potential AT issue) - If the results are not as expected, search the AT's Github repository to see if there are any open defects for the issue (potential AT issue) We will wrap-up by explaining the next steps for addressing an issue based on the results of your root cause analysis (i.e. who is responsible for fixing the bug, how it should ultimately be reported, etc.).
