Learning Accessible Design through Gamification

Date & Time
Wednesday, March 15, 2023 - 10:20 AM PST
Location
Grand GH
Description
It takes significant experience and time to become well-informed on the breadth of accessibility considerations for good Web design. This is the case even for those with one or more disabilities. Yet to make products and pages accessible, we need a critical mass of trained designers and developers. Although involving users with disabilities in research and testing helps inform and confirm decisions, to the degree we want to make experiences delightful, we need development teams to have the basics down, so that the focus can turn to innovating towards better designs, not struggling for basic accessibility. To date, training and education has focused on text-heavy guidance and implementation examples. Initial testing with a small set of sample questions suggests that through side-by-side comparisons of designs, we can more rapidly engage users, and make learning accelerated and fun. This presentation will expand on initial work done in this field at IBM. Attendees will be offered a chance to participate in real-time polling, and then comment on the results. We will then provide a forum for users to contribute towards an open-source online game for learning accessibility. We will address considerations around how to make a gaming interface accessible. We will also explore some of the challenges of constructing examples of inaccessible design which can yet remain explorable, and seek audience input on how to construct a question bank that welcomes involvement from all users.
