Teaching Math Skills Through a Sonified & Tactile iPad App

Date & Time
Friday, March 17, 2023 - 2:20 PM PST
Location
Grand CD
Description
Funded by an NIH Grant, Sonic Math Fundamentals is a gamified iPad app that teaches early “visual” math concepts to pre-K to grade-1 blind/low-vision students using tactile sheets and sonification. In the product, a student moves through a sequence of tactile graphic sheets of paper, that combine the tactile feel of a line with the corresponding sonic feedback. As the student’s finger follows a colored tactile line, they will hear a sound. When they encounter another line with another color – they will hear a different sound. When they touch an area of the tactile graphic sheet where there are no lines, the game is silent. We created three Teaching Tools which provides tactile and sonic feedback, as the student learns finding skills, tracing skills and identification skills for lines and shapes. After the student has mastered each teaching tool, we help the student understand how to use sonic-only feedback. We created three gamified sonified math apps: Hide & Seek, Star Gazer and Super Sleuth for the student to practice each of the 3 skills. We discuss the results of the testing with students and our plans to use the next phase of this NIH grant to teach eight major math concepts based on Common Core standards for pre-K to grade-1. We present detailed lesson plans that were provided on the Perkins School for the Blind eLearning website.
