Accessibility Guidelines for Mobile App Development
- Date & Time
Friday, March 17, 2023 - 9:20 AM PST
Orange County 3/4
Guideline 1: Designing user experiences - The first guideline should be incorporated early on in the design process. When designing an app, care must be taken to ensure that any previous user feedback is incorporated and also the design must be simple to understand and should be easily accessible to the users.
Guideline 2: Development process - The second guideline is to be followed when developing the app. The app must work well with screen readers (e.g. TalkBack or VoiceOver) and should have full keyboard support.
Guideline 3: Quality assurance and beta testing - The best way to test the accessibility of a feature is to test it in-house before releasing it to external users. Teams can set up Quality Assurance (QA) processes in place for carrying out this task.
Guideline 4: User research - Even after testing it thoroughly in-house and making sure the app is accessible, gathering user feedback in a smaller group testing can help polish the product even further. When a user uses the app in real-time, you can clearly see how easy or hard it is for the user to access the app and the feature.
Guideline 5: Addressing defects and user feedback - Once we gather enough feedback from the users to act on, the team must work on addressing those issues and release new app updates with the fixes for the user. This continuous process of fixing accessibility bugs and addressing user feedback helps make the product better accessible and usable.
