Technology Use by Hearing Impaired for Social Inclusion
- Description
-
Presently hearing-impaired adolescents are not alien to the world. The limitation in hearing reflects in their communication ability that impacts their personality including social skills. There are various methods to help them in developing their social skills. The use of ICT is one of the methods used for social inclusion. The central purpose of the study was to explore the use of various digital technological aids for the social inclusion of adolescents with hearing impairment in general society. A cross-section survey design was followed to gather data from a sample of 85 SWHI (both male and female) from graduate and post-graduate levels and their 50 teachers. Two structured questionnaires were developed; one for SWHI and the other for their teachers. Experts validated the instrument concerning content and construct validity. Cronbach alpha reliability of the instruments was .85. The collected data were analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistics. The study revealed that the use of digital devices has added great value in integrating SWHI in general society. However, the lack of availability of the latest technology has slowed down their inclusion. No significant difference has been found in the use of technology based on gender and academic grade of students. The study recommended the provision of the latest technology and teachers' training to use digital devices for teaching hearing-impaired students.
