Navigation for Every Ability Everywhere

Date & Time
Friday, March 18, 2022 - 2:20 PM PST
Location
Platinum 6 (LIVESTREAM)
Description
GoodMaps in partnership with New York University School of Medicine, Open Doors Organization, Acuity Brands, and Fantasmo is developing an accessible first-of-its-kind navigation application, which allows users to pick the parameters that address their particular travel or mobility needs. Our proposed development will create a simple application that runs on both iOS and Android smartphones and will be accessible to everyone regardless of their specific needs (i.e. based on inclusive design). The navigation app to use state-of-the-art positioning technology to provide navigation assistance both indoors and outdoors, create appropriates routes based on the user’s specific needs, and require minimal effort. A newly awarded grant will be reviewed, in which the objectives are: 1) develop a navigation app, 2) create an implementation plan for user interface design, 3) develop a customizable user interface, 4) incorporate existing location databases, 5) map the pilot test location, and 6) analyze the success in real world situations. Anticipated outcomes include: 1) provide a free to low-cost navigation application, 2) create a unified database of thousands of mapped buildings, 3) utilize state-of-the-art positioning technologies, 4) explore new orientation techniques using higher accuracy positioning, 5) incorporate new databases to include disability specific information, and 6) allow users to determine routing preferences. The expected products are the fully accessible application and the building database.

Session Summary (Abstract)
Navigation is tough. It’s easy to get lost, whether running to an appointment or traversing an airport. Furthermore, maps of most spaces, are not good, providing little detail. In this session, we discuss new methods in spatial mapping for navigation applications, providing persons of every ability safe and efficient travel experiences.
