A.I. Enabled Notetaking and Curation to Scale Accessibility

Note-Taking Accommodations are offered at all public universities, but requesting such accommodations can be an involved and intimidating process. According to the National Center for Learning Disabilities only 1 in 4 students with LD tell their college they have a disability. There are many students who have not been diagnosed or don't even know that they have a disability. As a student at junior college and later at UC San Diego for engineering I struggled to take notes among a few other challenges. I was only diagnosed with a disability during grad school at UC San Diego. From my own experience and learning how wide spread this issue was I decide to do something about it. With my expertise in Artificial Intelligence (A.I) I developed an automated notetaking system with guidance and support from UC San Diego's (UCSD) Office for Students with Disabilities. Through the iterative process of user centered design for accessibility we successfully developed and launched our advance lecture capture system which provides notetaking accommodations for academic departments across the UCSD campus. We earned an endorsement from both the UCSD Office for Students with Disabilities and Chancellor Pradeep Khosla for improving the accessibility of their online learning. Through the success of our notetaking system we expanded to post process various lecture types such as slide and tablet based lecture to make the content more accessible. For slide based videos users can upload a video for our AI to automatically generate a table contents which enables those with visual impairments to better navigate video content. It also splits the video into shorter segments by the topic, combines the Video and PDF formats, and provides a search speech transcript. There are many ways in which content can be post processed to improve accessibility and the key here is the use of artificial intelligence. If a university lecture captures 5000 courses a year the sheer amount of video editing and content curation makes it infeasible to make all of the raw lecture videos accessible.

Thousands of hours of long form lecture videos are being recorded every day and the lack of accessibility of these videos are leaving those with disabilities behind. Artificial Intelligence provides a means to make this content accessible through automating video editing and content curation.
