UDL and Accessibility: Making Sure You Get the Best of Both

Incorporating Universal Design for Learning (UDL) and accessibility is vital for student success in online learning. Great strides are being made, including both in digital products, but it is crucial to understand that they are not the same thing while they are intrinsically connected. Each has a specific role to play – making assumptions about how they are utilized could leave you short on meeting your learners' needs. The key is to have a clear strategy around identifying what you want, articulating those requirements, and then matching those to the capabilities offered in the products and services you choose. Asking the broad question "What does UDL support provide you?" can be met with a wide variety of answers. Often, the options can be confusing, mislabeled, and not uniformly implemented across the most important areas to your users. And even if a product has features that support the UDL approach, it doesn't mean that those features meet the standards required for accessibility. As a maker, consumer, and advisor of different educational products, along with advocating for learners with disabilities for more than 20 years, it is important to have a plan in place to ensure you get what you need from the products and services you choose for your schools and students.
