BUILD PODER is hosting a week-long series of workshops and events to inform CSUN STEM transfer students what research is, why research is important, and how to get involved in research. BUILD PODER Research Week for STEM Transfers will include an opportunities fair with representatives from research programs and centers on campus, professional development workshops, a meet and greet with an undocumented scholar, and a viewing of short films about Students of Color in STEM.

CSUN transfer students from the following colleges are invited to attend:  

  • Engineering & Computer Science
  • Health & Human Development
  • Science & Mathematics
  • Social & Behavioral Sciences

Monday September 10
Email Etiquette & Cover Letter Workshop — Learn the basics of email etiquette for professional communication and tips on writing a cover letter that stands out.

Location: Lilac Hall (Off Plummer on the north side of campus, across the street from the Art & Design Department)

Tuesday, September 11
CV & Cover Letter — Workshop Learn how to create a Curriculum Vitae (CV)—the academic version of a resume—plus tips on writing a cover letter that stands out.*

Wednesday, September 12
UndocuScholar Meet & Greet — Learn about campus resources for undocu-STEM students and hear from a scholar about her journey in pursuing a BS and MS in microbiology, immunology & molecular genetics.
Time: 3-4:30pm
Location: Oviatt Library Ferman Presentation Room (OV 81)

Thursday, Sept. 13
MAIN EVENT: Getting Into Research: Talk & Opportunities Fair — Learn about research opportunities on campus from BUILD PODER and CSUN research programs and centers such as:
Programs: MARC/RISE, CAMINO, CIRM, Data Science with Linkages to Industry Program
Centers: Center for Southern California Studies, Marilyn Magaram Center for Food Science, Nutrition & Dietetics
Time: 11:30am-2:30pm

Friday, September 14
Short Films: Students of Color in STEM
Time: 1-2:30pm
Location: Lilac Hall (Off Plummer on the north side of campus, across the street from the Art & Design Department)

All week: CSUN Food Pantry Drive
In support of the CSUN Food Pantry, we will be collecting non-perishable foods & toiletries during BUILD PODER Research Week. Please drop off your donations at Oviatt 21 or Oviatt 27 (located at the garden level of the Oviatt Library accessible underneath the front steps). We will also have a donation bin at each event.
