Datebook: Towers of clay, the L.A. landscape reconsidered, dance at the Getty Villa
“Karla Klarin: Subdividing the LAndscape,” at CSUN Art Galleries. The San Fernando Valley-raised artist examines some of our city’s more quotidian landscapes in a series of painted works that take sprawl and the suburban as points of inspiration. But don’t expect the cookie cutter: Klarin’s works have a way of capturing grit. Opens Monday and runs through Oct. 8. A reception will be held at 4 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 10; an artist talk will take place at 10 a.m. Monday, Sept. 12, at Cal State Northridge, 18111 Nordhoff St., Northridge, csun.edu.

It’s often said that persistence, the ability to hang in there for as long as it takes, is essential if you want to work in the National Park Service. Solorio was determined enough to take on seven years of seasonal work and internships at various national parks and national forests, while attending Cal State Los Angeles and grad school at Cal State Northridge, hustling two or three jobs at a time to make ends meet. He eventually landed at his present post, leading the Santa Monica (SAMO) Youth Program, which seeks to inspire diverse high-school students to support and steward public lands. -- High Country News

Bringing more than 20 years of finance and project management experience to Big Blue Bus, he will be responsible for financial operations, grant management, budgeting, payroll, procurement, and administrative functions. O’Connor holds a Bachelor’s degree from Michigan State University, and an Accounting degree from California State University, Northridge.
