Ventura College Santa Paula, President Greg Gillespie leads open forum on future plans for the Santa Clara River Valley

Maria de la luz Flores, Counselor, brings more than 20 years of experience in higher education to Ventura College Santa Paula having worked with students from diverse backgrounds in the California Community College and California State University systems. Flores is the youngest of three children and the first to receive a college degree. She received a Bachelor of Arts in English Literature and a Master of Science in Counseling from California State University, Northridge. She is also an alumna of Ventura College. Flores discovered her calling to serve low-income first-generation students while working at the CSUN-Ventura campus. Prior to her new assignment at VCSP, she served as the CalWORKs Counselor/Coordinator at Oxnard College. -- Tri County Sentry

Datebook: Towers of clay, the L.A. landscape reconsidered, dance at the Getty Villa

“Karla Klarin: Subdividing the LAndscape,” at CSUN Art Galleries. The San Fernando Valley-raised artist examines some of our city’s more quotidian landscapes in a series of painted works that take sprawl and the suburban as points of inspiration. But don’t expect the cookie cutter: Klarin’s works have a way of capturing grit. Opens Monday and runs through Oct. 8. A reception will be held at 4 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 10; an artist talk will take place at 10 a.m. Monday, Sept. 12, at Cal State Northridge, 18111 Nordhoff St., Northridge, csun.edu.
