CSUN Alum Dirk Gates: Six Steps To Public Wi-Fi Security

Wi-Fi has enabled the mass adoption, use and innovation of connected devices. We have come to expect ubiquitous Wi-Fi wherever we go: coffee shops, hotels and airports all offer public access Wi-Fi networks. Even the London Underground is meeting the connectivity demands of our ‘always connected’ society. Our modern, nomadic workforces rely on internet connectivity to operate remotely, however the majority of public Wi-Fi connections remain unencrypted and incapable of protecting user data. Anyone with malicious intent can use these unencrypted networks to access information ranging from confidential company data to financial transactions. Attacks are increasingly compromising email accounts, passwords and other personal information. -- Information Security Buzz

New Publishers Relaunch Edible Sacramento Magazine

Burden and Goodman, who are partners in business and in life, are a good fit as well. With a journalism degree from California State University Northridge, Burden has worked for publications in California, Washington, Oregon and Nevada. Goodman previously sold dental equipment and now leverages her sales experience to lead advertising and distribution. As Burden says, “You need both of those disciplines — journalism and sales — to succeed in magazine publishing.” -- Comstock's Magazine

CSUN Professor Emeritus Writes Letter to The New York Times

In recent years, dozens of limitations on abortion rights were passed by a majority of states, while Planned Parenthood was severely attacked. Unfortunately, Gillian Thomas’s review of Marjorie J. Spruill’s “Divided We Stand: The Battle Over Women’s Rights and Family Values That Polarized American Politics” (March 12) gives no context for the successful rightist war on women. That context is the sharp decrease in democratic traits. In 1980, there were 13 billionaires in the United States; in 2016, there were 540. In 1965, the income ratio of C.E.O.s of the top 350 firms to that of their workers was 20 to one. By 2014, it had mushroomed to 296 to one. Nearly one-third of workers were unionized in the 1960s, but only some 10 percent are so today. -- The New York Times

Proposed Bus Rapid Transit Line Would Serve Cal State Northridge

Currently, the Valley's lone high-capacity east-west transit corridor is the Orange Line, which runs along a historic rail right-of-way in the South Valley. Though well patronized, the Orange Line does not adequately serve regional destinations in the North Valley, including California State University, Northridge (CSUN). -- urbanize.LA

11 Cheap and Free Things to Do This Week

Everything you've heard about how great John Cassavetes was is true, and yet none of it will fully prepare you for the depth of feeling in his wrenching body of work. That's as true of Minnie and Moskowitz as it is of any of his films, which is saying a lot. The romantic drama stars Gena Rowlands (the writer-director's wife and constant collaborator) alongside Seymour Cassel, another Cassavetes regular; their love affair, like those in most of Cassavetes' films, is painful in its authenticity.
