Antibiotic-resistant bacteria in ready-to-eat foods

Research presented at the ASM Microbe 2017 meeting by Bryan Sanchez of California State University-Northridge in Northridge, Calif., show that antibiotic-resistant bacteria are present in many ready-to-eat foods such as fresh produce and dairy products and may serve as a source of human exposure to antibiotic-resistant bacteria. About 2 million people become infected with antibiotic resistant-bacteria annually in the United States, resulting in over $35 billion in additional health care costs. Examining potential ways that humans can be exposed to antibiotic-resistant bacteria can help in understanding how to counter the threat. -- Phys.org

Rodolfo Acuña, professor at San Fernando Valley State (now California State University-Northridge), taught the first college-level course in Mexican-American history in 1966. CITY OF HOPE INTRODUCES NEWEST GRADUATES

Nathaniel E. Magilnick, of Santa Monica, California, earned a Bachelor of Science degree in microbiology from California State University, Northridge. Working in the lab of Mark Boldin, M.D., Ph.D., Magilnick studied how noncoding RNA contributes to the regulation of inflammatory responses and basic cellular functions. Magilnick is the co-author of several scientific papers and has a first-author manuscript in submission. He plans to continue investigating the basic biologically processes that govern innate immune responses. -- City of Hope
