My Mazda Road to Indy: Nikita Lastochkin

I grew up in the city, just doing regular stuff, nothing about racing. I hung out with my friend, getting in trouble. As soon as I graduated from high school at 16, I moved to the United States. I had no family here, no friends, but I'd always had an adventurous streak and I wanted to see the world, see what was out there. I didn't know what I wanted to do in my life, what degree to pursue, so I asked my parents if I could do it, and I moved to English First, a language school in the Los Angeles area. I could speak English, so it was more about exploring the city and the culture. It was a nine-month program and after it was done, I got an Associates Degree from Santa Monica College, then a business degree at Cal State Northridge. When I finished with school, I worked in the jewelry industry. -- Racer

ETC Makes the News at Fox Studios

Reinig's career path was equally transformative. While he worked in construction, he maintained an interest in photography and operated a DJ company with several DJs and mobile systems for private parties and nightclubs. When he was injured on a construction job, he went back to school -- first to Moorpark College, followed by a degree in cinematography at Cal State Northridge. "I was lucky to have a friend at Fox who let me play with equipment and learn the gear -- I also apprenticed with cinematographer Bill Bennett (a member of ASC) and fell in love with lighting." -- Lighting & Sound

At the California State University in Northridge, we have shown how well this tactic works. When hiring dozens of faculty members (Nature 538, 171; 2016), we included rigorous evaluations of their teaching and mentoring skills as an essential requirement in addition to their publication records. -- Nature

She and the other two returning commissioners are being joined by litigation attorney Tracy Richmond and Jolene Koester, a higher-ed consultant who was president of Cal State University-Northridge from 2000 to 2011. -- Del Mar Times
