AJC On Campus: Trump targets student debt, campus speech disruptions

That’s one of the things Georgia Gwinnett College’s interim president Mary Beth Walker said during a meeting her staff organized with reporters last week. The college was founded in 2006, but already facing infrastructure challenges, particularly with information technology, she said. As we know today’s technology is obsolete tomorrow. Walker also discussed doing more to help adult learners by offering more certificate courses. The average student age is 22.5 and one in eight students are 25 and older. “We’re not a start-up anymore,” she said. “It’s time we move up to another level.” The mission of taking the 12,500-student GGC to another level will be left to one of four finalists for the president’s job. Walker, who took over after last year’s retirement of Stanley “Stas” Preczewski, will become the provost at Cal State Northridge in July. -- AJC

Kentucky's new hero: Jemarl Baker answers the call in NCAA Tournament

Baker was something of an under-the-radar prospect in John Calipari’s 2017 recruiting class. A 4-star prospect who 247sports ranked as the 73rd-best player in his graduating class, Baker was far less celebrated than his fellow UK signees, each of the seven of whom were ranked No. 31 or higher. Baker had great bloodlines (his father played at Cal State Northridge and a sister played at Grand Canyon University), an excellent perimeter shot, and a celebrated work ethic. --Saturday Down South

Ron III, 19, is a freshman at Cal State Northridge while Jeron, 18, is on his last year at Bella Vista K-12 private school in Scottsdale, Arizona. Jeron was in Manila for a visit in 2015 and has since grown from 5-7 to 6-3. “He could grow a little more,” said Metta whose favorite Filipino dessert is halo-halo. “I was 19 when I grew another half-inch. I’m 6-5 3/4. Jeron could always shoot but he’s greatly improved his defense. That’s the foundation.” -- MSN Sports
