Admitted First-Time Freshman

Congratulations and welcome to California State University, Northridge!

Your next steps depend on your situation.  Are you an F-1 or J-1 visa student? Will you be coming to CSUN from inside or outside the United States? Follow the directions for your student group below.

J-1 Visa Students

Review the immigration requirements and other information on the International and Exchange Student Center (IESC) website at new J-1 students.

When your Form DS-2019 is ready, you may obtain it as follows:

  • If you are residing outside the U.S. at the time of admission, your DS-2019 will be mailed to you.
  • If you are visiting the U.S. at the time of admission, you may arrange to pick up your DS-2019 and your admission materials from our Office of International Admissions before you leave the U.S. Alternatively, you may leave us your forwarding address.

F-1 Visa Students

First-Time Freshman from Inside the U.S.

Form I-20 and SEVIS Record

You will receive a preliminary letter of admission asking you to notify your high school advisor to transfer your SEVIS record to CSUN. About two or three business days after your prior school releases you in the SEVIS database, your Form I-20 will be available for you to pick up from our Office of International Admissions.

  • If you prefer that we hold your I-20 for a friend or family member to pick up, please let us know as soon as possible.
  • If no one is available to pick up your I-20, you can mail or carry a self-addressed, pre-paid envelope to the Office of International Admissions. NOTE: We will not release your I-20 to any express mail companies without a self-addressed, pre-paid envelope.

Visa and Immigration Advisement

You will also receive instructions via email from CSUN's International and Exchange Student Center (IESC) to complete the mandatory online session called the Six-Step Immigration Requirements.

Mathematics Placement Test

A placement test does not affect your admission but places you into the class that matches your skill level.  You will receive test information for the Math Selection Assessment (MSA) by email from our International Admissions Office.

The international academic advisor for new students will also email you MSA information. Some MSA details are provided in the "New F-1 International Student Academic Advisement Process" Online Pre-Enrollment Workshop.

Academic Advisement

For your first semester only, you will be pre-enrolled in classes by the international academic advisor for new students in the CSUN Office of Undergraduate Studies. Pre-enrollment can be in-person or online and requires your participation.

How to Pre-enroll:

1. Watch for an email from the international academic advisor directing you to complete the Response Questionnaire and Online Information Workshop. Indicate your class preferences in the questionnaire.

2. If you do not receive the international academic advisor's email within 14 days of your admission, request a pre-enrollment appointment by contacting the advisor at:

International Academic Advisement Office
Extended University Commons (EU) Room 150
Email: ugs.intladvisor@csun.edu
Phone: (818) 677-6968

3. As a new student, you can only pre-enroll in classes when you have completed both of the following online processes and your advisement holds* are lifted:

A “new student registration” email with instructions for your first semester of enrollment will be sent to your CSUN Gmail account. Your enrollment appointment will also display in myNorthridge Portal under "My Checklist" each semester. For your first semester, you must pre-enroll with the international academic advisor. Don't delay—classes fill quickly and you must be enrolled in at least 12 units to maintain your student visa status.
