Prospective Students

Apply Associate Degree for Transfer Student

Two new programs help students transfer from California Community Colleges to the California State University (CSU) and complete the bachelor's degree in a timely and cost-effective way. The programs are:

  1. Associate Degrees for Transfer (ADT)
  2. California Promise Two-Year Pledge Program

Read this page if you plan to apply to CSUN having earned an ADT (AA-T or AS-T) degree from a California Community College, or you want to know more about ADT and/or California Promise.

IMPORTANT:  ADT applicants, please also review admission requirements at Transfer Student Applicant.

Quick Navigation - Associate Degrees for Transfer

About ADT

Unlike regular AA or AS degrees, the Associate Degrees for Transfer (ADT) come with certain guarantees and are designed especially for transfer to the California State University (CSU). ADTs are sometimes referred to as the STAR Act or SB 1440. To learn more, read this page, contact your community college counselor, or visit the California Community Colleges ADT information page.

Completing an ADT in the arts (an AA-T) or the sciences (an AS-T) at a California Community College guarantees the benefits listed below.

ADT Benefits

Students who earn a verified AA-T or AS-T that matches a major at the CSU they want to attend will:

  • Receive priority admission consideration. This is an advantage because many CSU campuses and majors are impacted. Helpful: CSUN Transfer Impaction
  • Be admitted with junior standing, ready for upper-division course work at the CSU
  • Be guaranteed admission to a CSU though not necessarily to a particular campus or major
  • Be able to complete the transfer major in 60 more semester units (90 quarter units). If you change your major at the CSU, however, the guarantee is lost. Helpful: Verify Your ADT Major for CSUN

To maintain your ADT status once admitted to CSUN, review the ADT policies at Planning Tools for ADT/STAR Act Students, where you’ll also find “Degree Road Maps” for completing your major in 60 additional units.

About California Promise

Students admitted to CSUN with a verified Associate Degree for Transfer (ADT) are invited to participate in the California Promise Program and take the Two-Year Pledge to complete their bachelor’s degree in two more college years at a rate of 30 semester units per year including summer and winter terms. Note: Your ADT major must match one of the CSUN majors listed below.

California Promise participants will receive priority registration for each state-supported enrollment period along with routine and thorough academic advisement. For program requirements, qualifications and the pledge form, visit CSUN’s California Promise Program.

Verify Your ADT Major for CSUN

To qualify for admission to an ADT degree-completion program and/or the California Promise Program at California State University, Northridge (CSUN), you must:

  • Be pursuing one of the California Community College ADT majors listed in the table below (left column), and
  • Apply for admission to the matching CSUN-approved major and option if applicable (right column of table), and
  • Meet the CSUN admission requirements and deadlines explained at Transfer Student Applicant.

Note: As a California resident with an AA-T or AS-T degree, you will also be affected by transfer impaction if you are outside CSUN's local admission area (spring 2023 admission only) and/or you have chosen an impacted major.
