Application Filing Periods & Deadlines

To apply for admission to California State University, Northridge, you'll need to know:

  1. Is the application filing period for your target degree program open or closed?
    Check the Admissions Calendar on this page for your group listed below.
  2. Are you eligible for admission to your target degree program?

Initial Filing Periods 

The initial application filing period is the minimum time that applications for admission are considered. The initial filing periods for CSUN are:

  • FALL semester admission: October 1 - November 30*
  • SPRING semester admission: August 1-31* 

*Graduate programs typically remain open for an extended time beyond the initial filing period. For details, select the “Graduate Student” row below.

First-Time Freshman

Spring 2018 Admission

Initial Filing Period:

August 1-31, 2017.

Current Status:

CLOSED to Spring 2018 applications.

Important Dates:

SAT/ACT scores are required for all first-time freshmen and must be received by Admissions and Records no later than August 31, 2017. See additional requirements at Applicants.

 

Fall 2018 Admission

Initial Filing Period:

October 1 through November 30, 2017.

Freshman applications must be received during the initial filing period.

For Fall 2018 admission, CSUN is impacted to first-time freshmen and 11 impacted majors.

Impacted Majors:

Four Undergraduate Programs in Business:

  • Accountancy

  • Finance - Financial Analysis

  • Finance - Financial Planning

  • Finance - Insurance

And these seven majors and their options:

  • Biology

  • Cinema & Television Arts

  • Communication Studies

  • Health Sciences

  • Kinesiology

  • Music

  • Psychology

Current Status:

Transfer Student

Lower-division transfer student applications are not currently considered for admission to Cal State Northridge. To confirm that you are an upper-division transfer student, please visit Applicants

Spring 2018 Admission

Initial Filing Period:

August 1-31, 2017.

New!  The spring application filing period has been extended through September 8, 2017. Transfer applications must be received by 11:59 pm on September 8.

CSUN is impacted to transfer students and 11 impacted majors. Please see CSUN Impaction and Applicants.

Current Status:

CLOSED.

Also CLOSED to resident transfer students including those with an associate degree for transfer (AA-T and AS-T).

Credential Student

 

Spring 2018 Admission

Initial Filing Period Begins:

August 1, 2017.

University applications for graduate programs, including credential programs, are typically accepted after the initial filing period. However, individual credential programs may have earlier closing dates.

For individual credential program application deadlines or exceptions, contact the CSUN Credential Office.

NOTE: Two (2) applications are required—one to the University and the other to the Credential Program.

University applications for graduate programs, including credential programs, are typically accepted after the initial filing period. However, individual credential programs may have earlier closing dates.

For individual credential program application deadlines, review the Credential Programs website or contact the CSUN Credential Office.

NOTE: Two (2) applications are required - one to the University and another to the Credential Program.

If the application filing period for the individual credential program you desire is closed, please do not complete a university application. Contact the CSUN Credential Office for guidance.

Please note:

  • Before completing the university application, review the Credential Application Requirements for the desired program.
  • University applications will typically be accepted after the Credential Program application closes to accommodate applicants who did not submit a university application.
  • Both a university and a credential program application are required.

Graduate Student - Master's and Doctorate

Spring 2018 Admission

Initial Filing Period Begins:

August 1, 2017. 

Graduate applications for master's degree programs will be accepted starting August 1. Most programs open for spring admission will continue to accept applications after August 31, when the initial filing period ends.  While some programs may stay open until November 1, individual programs may close earlier. Please contact the department for more information.

Individual graduate programs may have earlier closing dates than the University deadline published here. For individual program application deadlines, contact the desired Graduate Program.

Some graduate programs accept applications only for fall—not spring—admission. For individual program status, see "Current Status" below.

Note that two (2) applications are often required - one to the University and the other to the individual graduate program. Read more at Graduate Applicants.

Post-Baccalaureate, Unclassified Student

Post-baccalaureate unclassified applications are not currently considered for admission to Cal State Northridge. Read more about classified and conditionally classified status in the University Catalog.

Second Bachelor's Student

Applications for second bachelor's degrees in all majors are strictly limited at this time.

Spring 2018 Admission

Initial Filing Period:

August 1 through 31, 2017.

Current Status:

CLOSED to Spring 2018 applications.

Applications for second bachelor's degrees in all majors are strictly limited at this time.

 

Fall 2018 Admission

Initial Filing Period:

October 1 through November 30, 2017.

Current Status:

OPEN.

CSUN will accept second bachelor's degree applications for the Radiologic Sciences major only. Please review admission requirements at Second Bachelor's Degree Applicant.

Applications for second bachelor's degrees in all majors are strictly limited at this time.

Graduate Intrasystem Concurrent Enrollment, Intrasystem Visitor Enrollment

Spring 2018:  CLOSED. OPENING January 12, 2018.

Returning Student

 

Spring 2018 Admission

Fall 2018 Admission

Initial Filing Period begins:

October 1, 2017.

Returning undergraduate students must apply for admission during the initial filing period, October 1 through November 30, 2017. Review the requirements for returning students, whether in good standing or previously disqualified in the last semester at CSUN, at Returning Applicants.

Returning graduate students: Application deadlines for each graduate program are listed at Cal State Apply Application Dates & Deadlines.

Important Dates:

Returning undergraduate students who were disqualified in their last attendance at CSUN must complete the Previously Disqualified Student Questionnaire (.pdf) and submit it to Admissions & Records no later than March 1, 2018. For details, see Returning PD Student.
