Dr. Dianne Bartlow is Associate Professor of Gender and Women's Studies at California State University, Northridge. She is presently the Associate Chair and Advisor for GWS.
R. Dianne Bartlow received her Ph.D. in Communication from the University of California, San Diego in 2000. Her work focuses on representations of African- American women in popular music, culture and media. Her areas of research also include early Black Feminist Thought, and violence against women. She has worked extensively in television production and is a multiple Emmy Award winning producer/ writer/director. Bartlow won an Emmy for her video short in "Pioneer Women." The program gave tribute to unsung heroines in the Los Angeles area for their dedication and commitment to community service.
Bartlow also won two Gold Aurora Awards for her DART video short for Best Documentary Issue, and Best Documentary History. DART focused on the partnership between the Los Angeles Police Department and domestic violence victim advocates. While at CBS/KCBS Television, Bartlow received a number of accolades for her work including "Meeting the Challenge: Inside Black Hollywood," which garnered Emmy and N.A.A.C.P Image Award nominations. She has been associated with programs and segments produced in conjunction with Lifetime Television, Entertainment Tonight and the Oprah Winfrey Show.
Dr. Bartlow s published work includes: "No Throw Away Woman: Maria Miller Stewart as Forerunner of Black Feminist Thought," in Black Women s Intellectual Traditions: Speaking Their Minds, eds. Kristin Waters and Carol B. Conaway, by the University of Vermont Press-University Press of New England, 2007), and "Women of Color in Academia," in Women in Mass Communication, 2nd ed., Pamela Creedon, ed., SAGE, 1993, and several creative scholarship projects.
