English 28
Winter Session 2008
Course Description
Intermediate Reading and Composition (English 28) is a three unit foundation course in critical reading and writing skills required of those students intending to transition to English 101. It is also a requirement for the A.A. degree. Through reading, discussion of selected prose works, and a collection of short-writes, timed expository writing and essays, you will learn to understand grammatical constructions, improve sentence structure and analyze, synthesize, and organize information logically through paragraph and essay writing.
This class will be conducted in a combination of online and on-campus class meetings. Weeknight class meetings will be online and we will meet on campus from noon-4:00 on the following Saturdays: 1/5, 1/12, 1/19, & 1/26.
You will become more proficient and confident in your powers of self-expression by investigating the varied ways in which you intuitively and consciously communicate your thoughts in writing. This class is run as a workshop where you may feel free to ask and to pose questions, to join in class discussion, the purpose of which is discovery, not recitation. Class discussions, both online and face to face, will help you to clarify your own thinking on the topics we will cover, thus leading to the development of paragraphs and essays on these topics.
The prerequisite for English 28 is a grade of “C” or better in English 21 or a satisfactory score on the English Placement Test.
