My solo trip to Northern California's Lost Coast, a very undeveloped part of the west coast. Highway 1 moves inland to avoid this area which gives you an idea as to how remote it is. I spent two days here and then continued on to the Redwoods and hiked there for two days.

My pack on the car at the trailhead. I made a real effort to try and go light this time. Though I could have shaved a few more pounds off I think the pack's total weight was just under twenty pounds. Quite a change from my usual thirty-five. |

This is the first part of the beach I saw. Even though it was spring break I didn't see too many other hikers. |

Another shot of the beach a bit further on. |

This is the Punta Gorda Lighthouse, built in 1910 and abandon in 1951. Since there were no roads in the area, all the construction materials were hauled in from a schooner stationed offshore. |

The remains of a small boat after the lost coast was done with it. Accord to a web site I found it was a 70 foot shrimp boat. |

A couple of pack-llamas. These animals seem to be very polite! When I was walking up the trail that white llama on the right was sitting right in the middle of it - but as I got closer he got out of the way 'till I passed. |

Sea lions sunning themselves on some offshore rocks. They're quite vocal infact, that night I could still hear them even though they were more than a 1/4 mile away from my camp. |

I stayed the night under that tree. It may look nice from here but there was a surprising amount of trash laying about. Still, it was sheltered from the wind and dry. |

Looking back up the coast in the morning. After spending a fairly restful night I awoke to find that the tide had come in and the surf was much higher than the day before. |

The shelter I wish I had known about the night before. It was only a little way beyond my tree. |

Looking south, down the coast towards an abandon farm. |

Some of the trail I had to contend with. Actually it wasn't as bad as I thought it my be, give the time of year. Still the muddy sections were, well, muddy. |

		The abandon farm. |

Part of a jelly fish. |

This is the area I saw right before I turned around. |

Any guesses as to what this is? A buoy? |

		Inside the mystery object. |

Some pictures of the lighthouse. I had more time to explore on the way back. Also, it was a great excuse to take a break from hiking into the amazingly heavy head wind. |

Looking out from the lighthouse's tower. |

Looking down from the top of the stairs in the lighthouse. |

First floor of the lighthouse. |

Looking back to the "windy corner". The wind was the incredibly strong there. I can see why most people choose to hike the Lost Coast, north to south. The combination of wet sand and strong head wind gives you quite a work out. |
